Hal POV
I wake up, and almost immediately leap out of bed, thinking that I must have overslept since my room is already way brighter than it should be in the morning. But after a moment of slowing down to think, and checking my phone, I realize that it's just my eyes acting abnormally sensitive.
The time is just 6:45.
Maybe because of my physiological changes, but most likely due to my abrupt awakening, any weariness that I should be feeling, is completely washed away. Because of this, I decide that I might as well get my day started, despite having at least another half hour until I actually need to get up.
Getting dressed and out of my room, I find the living room and kitchen empty, which shouldn't be surprising, but since I'm the kind of person to oversleep, Sara is almost always up before me.
I hesitate for a moment, while trying to decide what to do. According to common courtesy, I should make breakfast since I'm the first one awake. But Sara is also better at cooking, so she might prefer to handle it herself..
Ah, whatever. I'll just do it. I might as well. Omelette it is.
...
"You're up already?.." Sara groggily asks me, still nearly half-asleep and wrapped up in her beige morning robe.
"Yup. I woke up early and couldn't fall asleep, so I decided to make breakfast." I state truthfully.
"That's unusual." Walking up to the counter, she audibly yawns. "How come it's so dark in here?"
I tilt my head in confusion, not really getting her question. "Dark?"
"Yeah. Duh. How can you see what you're cooking? The curtains aren't drawn, and the lights are off."
My eyes go wide as I suddenly realize what she means.
I rush for the light switch, and flick it on, causing both of us to squint, but me more than my sister.
"I, uhm.. Didn't want to disturb you?.. Your door was open and I was worried that light might spill in."
She yawns once more, but doesn't seem to care about my ramblings. "Yeah yeah. Whatever. That's stupid. How are you supposed to not burn the food?" Even though my sister is always up before me, she's clearly not a morning person.
"I.. Didn't think that far?.." I sweat drop, but realize that Sara is too tired to be thinking too deeply into anything.
"I'm going to rest on the couch. Call me when the food is ready." She walks away, not bothering to finish any conversation, and pretty much just throws herself into the couch.
"Sure.. I'll do that."
...
Breakfast goes smoothly, and I don't end up burning anything. Although admittedly my cooking is a bit lacking compared to Sara's. I don't consider this a failure however, since accounting for the amount of practice I've actually done, this is a pretty decent result.
Sara doesn't seem to mind, and after both of us eat in silence, she utters a simple "thank you for the food", before heading back to her room in order to get ready for school.
...
The entire day after this point passes pretty much as one would expect. I get to school on time, go to my classes, take notes, and socialize as high school students do during the gaps in schedule.
At one point during the day, I might have seen Inesa's head bobbing past in the corridor, but we never stopped to chat. I also didn't ever spot Hina, so my day was uneventful when it comes to female interaction.
Why I haven't spotted the latter girl, I find out almost immediately when the school day ends.
When I open my locker to retrieve my phone, almost right away I find that I have two missed calls, and a text from Hina.
"Hey! I realize that you're in school right now, so call me back when you get the chance!" Her text reads.
Since I'd rather not call while still in the corridor, I decide to wait until I'm outside, and instead, I send off a text reply.
"I'm out now, gonna call in a few minutes. How come you're not in school?"
My message is almost instantly marked as read, but even as I leave the school, I don't receive any follow up message.
I hit the quick dial, and so quickly that I am at first confused whether or not it rings properly, the call goes through.
"Hello, this is Hal. Obviously." I greet her a bit awkwardly. "What's up?"
"Not much. I'm just at home resting. Bored out of my mind." Her voice doesn't sound bored though, and instead I get the opposite impression from her.
"How come? Are you sick?" Her voice doesn't sound off.
"I.. Uhm.." The line goes silent for a couple seconds as if she hesitates. "A little bit. My parents wanted me to stay home just to make sure. You know this weather.."
Sure, it's cold.. Quickly I glance around to make sure that no-one is listening in. "Aren't you supposed to prefer cold weather though? Like.. With your genetics and stuff?"
She pauses for a moment. "Right.. Forgot that I don't need to lie to you about that.."
I raise one eyebrow in response, although pointlessly since she can't see me.
"Soo?.." I try to lure out an answer, while staying as casual as possible.
"I'm.. Having something like a cold, bit in reverse?.." Hina's tone is uncertain, as if she's asking a question rather than making a statement.
"Why does it sound like-" I am about to ask her about it, when suddenly I'm interrupted by someone crashing into me from behind.
"Heyy! Guess who?" At the same time, my world goes dark as the person covers my eyes with her small, but warm hands.
"Inesa!?" What is going on!? Isn't this like way out of character!?
"Rude. I'm just here to say hi." Inesa pretends to pout when I spin around to look at her.
"Hal? Hal? What's going on?" Hina ask's on the other end of the line.
Realizing that I can't be on the phone when Inesa obviously wants to talk about something, I decide to quickly wrap up the call, regardless if I may come off as a bit rude. I'd much less rather annoy Inesa with what she's capable of..
"My bad, something came up. I'll call you back a little later okay? See you!" I feel a little bad about being so abrupt.
"Okay?.. See y-" Quickly, and before she even has time to finish her sentence, I press the red button to hang up.
