PERCY

"First day of school!" Mom yelled at the top of her lungs. "Are you excited?!"

I groaned. "Uuuuhhh. Mom, I'm barely even conscious."

She didn't care. She pranced into my room and opened my curtains, blinding me with sunlight. I groaned louder and covered my eyes, but she pulled my blankets off of me. She started waking me up how she always did when I was a little boy- by tickling me relentlessly. I couldn't fight the laughter and it shot me awake, and she finally stopped and stood up straight.

"I'm making breakfast," she said. "You should go ahead and get ready."

Naturally, like any person before the first day of school, I had my outfit all laid out the night before and quickly got dressed. I borrowed some of Paul's cologne and he wished me luck before running off to the school, since he works there and has to get his classroom ready a little early.

I joined my mom in the kitchen and saw Tempest already sitting at the table, tinkering with what appeared to be a cell phone. I sat down next to her and nudged her with my knee, which warranted her signature death stare.

"Whasthat?"

"Your new phone!" Mom said.

I blinked. "Excuse me?"

"I got you a new phone," Tempest told me. I opened my mouth but she stopped me. "I enchanted it to hide your demigod aura."

"En-enchanted?"

"My powers are stronger than you think," Tempest said. "You just don't know since they aren't very useful in battle."

"That illusion thing was pretty powerful."

"And that was the only time it paid off," Tempest reminded me. "My powers are much better for behind-the-scenes or everyday stuff, like fake IDs and shapeshifting. And this, of course. It basically hides your aura every time you use your phone. It'll wear off eventually, so make sure you give it back to me if you get a bad vibe."

"A bad vibe?"

"Trust me, you'll know," Tempest told me. "I already got your mom and Paul and me in there." She gave me a look. "And I put a tracker on it. In case you lose it."

That's a lie if I ever fucking heard it. She put a tracker on there to track me, obviously. I saw Mom fighting a smile, and had a feeling it was her idea. That didn't really bother me, though. It's not like I sneak off and go to parties and do weed and hire hookers. It's more like I'm up past my bedtime playing video games or eating a bunch of sugar my mom doesn't want me to have. And it's not like I succumb to peer pressure. I don't make friends very easily. The only person that might make me do a bad thing is, of course, Tempest Montgomery.

Mom fed me a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon and began telling me about how happy she was about Tempest going to school with me. How she'll help me stay safe, maybe hide my demigod aura, be my friend. Tempest just gave me a very sinister smile, so I got the feeling she planned to do none of these things.

"You still have red eyes," I told her, shoveling eggs in my mouth.

"Do I?" I turned to look at her, and it's very upsetting to see her with the exact same eye color as mine. Now, she actually looks like my sister. I cringed and shook my head and she just laughed. "This was your suggestion, Percy."
