TEMPEST

⋆⁺₊⋆ ☀︎ ⋆⁺₊⋆

I screamed Annabeth's name, my voice breaking, which I didn't know it could even do, but it was too late. She was gone.

Even so, I started to run after her, but our enemies weren't done with us. There was a snap-snap-snap from the helicopter- the sound of gunfire.

Most of the Hunters scattered as tiny holes appeared in the snow at their feet, but the girl with auburn hair just looked up calmly at the helicopter.

"Mortals," she announced, "are not allowed to witness my hunt."

She thrust out her hand, and the helicopter exploded into dust- no, not dust. The black metal dissolved into a flock of birds- ravens, which scattered into the night.

The Hunters advanced on us.

The one called Zoe stopped short when she saw Thalia. "You," she said with distaste.

"Zoe Nightshade." Thalia's voice trembled with anger. "Perfect timing, as usual."

I sided with her, not sure why she was already mad at Zoe, but I had a perfectly fucking good reason. I didn't really care about the fact that I knew a goddess was about two feet away or that these stupid bitches saved the others or whatever. I focused on two whole things; the Hunters fired their arrows when Annabeth was still on the monster's back, and their actions caused my best friend to fall off a cliff. When that happens to you, you can talk to me about how I reacted.

"What the fuck is the matter with you?!" I screamed in Zoe's face. "Two seconds! You couldn't wait two seconds!"

She shoved me back. "Do not advance on me like that!"

I yanked my fist back to punch her, but then the twelve-year-old goddess caught my wrist midair. She didn't look mad, which really surprised me. She didn't even hold my wrist all that tight. She held it gently, the way Annabeth did. It stunned me into silence.

Zoe scanned the rest of the group. "Five half-bloods and a satyr, my lady."

"Yes," the younger girl said, still holding onto me. Maybe she thought if she let go, I'd tackle that stupid Zoe girl. "Some of Chiron's campers, I see."

"Annabeth!" Percy yelled. "You have to let us save her!"

The auburn-haired girl turned toward him. "I'm sorry, Percy Jackson, but your friend is beyond help."

Percy tried to struggle to his feet, but a couple of the girls held him down.

"You are in no condition to be hurling yourself off cliffs," the auburn-haired girl said.

"Let me go!" Percy demanded. "Who do you think you are?"

Zoe stepped forward as if to smack him.

"No," the auburn-haired girl ordered. "I sense no disrespect, Zoe. They are simply distraught. They do not understand."

The young girl looked at me, her eyes colder and brighter than the winter moon. "I am Artemis," she said. "Goddess of the Hunt."
