ANNABETH

"I just... think... I dunno. Maybe you should try to talk to her," Percy suggested. His hair was horribly sweaty and his top lip was swollen on one side, so he slurred when he spoke. He didn't explain why he looked like that. I forgot to ask.

"I don't want to talk to her," I snapped. I didn't need to hear anything about Tempest. I wanted nothing to do with her. As far as I was concerned, she was dead to me. "Tell me why you're all busted up."

"Hockey practice," Percy said, running a hand through his soaked hair. Apparently, sweating is the only time his hair gets wet. How do showers work, though? "We lost the game last week, so Coach is busting our balls over this."

I wrinkled my nose. "Ew, who talks like that?"

"Everyone," Percy mumbled. "What's going on with your school?"

"Nothing."

"You're not on any teams or in any clubs?"

"Nope," I said spitefully. "Seems like your hockey career is going great."

He shrugged, clearly not gathering how pissy I was. "I mean, I'm pretty good, but I probably won't do this next year. The only reason I did it was because of Tempest. Same with..." He saw my face and cleared his throat. "Anyways, I was wondering if you might be able to come to the championship game."

"What?"

"I mean, if we win the next two, we go to state," Percy said. "Might be kinda fun. Free concessions, and then we can hang out again!"

Yeah, with HER there. "I'll see. I'm busy with school."

His face fell and he nodded. "No, yeah. Yeah, I-I get it. It's a long trip and whatever... Just um, lemme know if you change your mi-"

"BOY!" I flinched at the sound of Tempest's voice and felt my heart pounding. "What's taking so long?!"

"Y-you can't be in here," Percy choked out, looking somewhere behind him.

"I go wherever the fuck I want- Hey, who are you talking to?"

"Nobody!" Before I knew it, Percy swiped through the Iris message just as Tempest began rounding the corner. I leaned back in my seat, panting slightly as I tried to get myself under control.

"Annabeth!" Dad called. "Are you ready?"

"C-coming!" I wiped my face with the towel, drying to dry off the sweat. Stop thinking about her.

The past several months of my life had been hell on earth. I sat in my dad's car, staring out the window. The storms over Mount Tam had gotten significantly worse ever since Ethan Nakamura pledged his allegiance and raised Kronos. Sometimes, I could see the dim glow of fires in braziers. In the dead of night, when my insomnia would keep me awake, I could hear Atlas cursing under the sky, or the Titan army cheering with glee at the prospect of killing my friends.

Dad parked his car outside the big building with various businesses inside. He sighed, turning the engine off, and I could feel his gaze on me with the heavy sigh he released.
