TEMPEST

The door led into a dark hallway. I heard sounds of scuffling up ahead, then a painful grunt.

I reached down, asking silently for my weapons. See, I learned something cool. The others have magical weapons concealed as certain things- a pen, a bracelet, etc. Me?

I can use the ghostly world as a storage locker!

Immediately, up sprouted the twin hilts of my swords. I reached down and lifted them out of the ghostly void, saying my thanks to the spirits that brought the swords to me. I held them comfortably in my hands, revealing the matching Stygian iron blades. They were hooked, perfect for snatching enemies, glowing faintly purple and ghostly blue.

You may be wondering, Oh, Tempest! What about your kunai darts?

Yeah. I gave that up.

See, I didn't fight a whole lot back in the day, so the kunai darts were a good idea since they were so easy to store away and get out of my mind. The rare occasions I did fight, I'd whip out my darts. But, there's a small problem. Kunai darts are, well, darts, meaning they're absolutely tiny. Even worse than most knives. I'm a good fighter, but the more time I spend with Camp Half-Blood and the demigod world, the more I have to fight crazy shit and possibly "get hurt", which happens more with a short-range weapon such as kunai. I decided over the summer that I needed a weapon with longer range so I didn't "get hurt" during a battle and get my secret outed.

I jogged down the corridor, but when I got to the other end, no one was there. I opened a door and found myself back in the main entry hall. I was completely turned around. I didn't see Dr. Thorn anywhere, but there on the opposite side of the room were the di Angelo kids. They stood frozen in horror, staring right at me. They'd never seen me in person, so they didn't know that I was their cat (which they named fucking Oedipuss, and I was really tempted to turn into a panther and maul them).

I advanced slowly, letting my swords drop down. "Hey, don't worry. I'm not here to hurt you."

They didn't answer. Their eyes were full of fear. What was wrong with them? Where was Dr. Thorn? Maybe he'd sensed the presence of my swords and retreated. Monsters hated Stygian iron weapons even more than celestial bronze.

"My name's Tempest," I said, keeping my voice level. "I'm going to take you out of here, get you somewhere safe."

Bianca's eyes widened. Her fists clenched. Then I kind of went, Ah, shit, and I barely turned around in time, deflect ing a strange needle sent my way. Then, like nothing had happened, a huge... hand? Claw? I dunno. Something yanked me backward into the wall.

I slashed with my swords, but there was nothing to hit.

"Yes, Tempest Montgomery," Dr. Thorn said. "Iknow who you are."

I tried to move, but realized I was stuck. My shirt was pinned to the wall by some kind of spike- a black dagger-like projectile about a foot long, definitely reminding me of my old kunai. It had grazed the skin of my shoulder  as it passed through my clothes, but I'd already healed. Bianca and Nico hadn't noticed. I noticed the spike sizzling, and it smelled sour.
