Tempest wasn't allowed to run away from me so easy. I wouldn't allow it. I made her stay, and she gave me a weird look.

I just grinned. "You never took me to the movies."

She rolled her eyes dramatically. "Fine. Tropic Thunder just came out. Wanna go watch that?"

"Definitely!" I said. I had no idea what Tropic Thunder even was. "Take me tomorrow night."

"Bossy bitch," she muttered, closing the door as she stepped back into my room. "Grab the 'mote. We're playing another round."

We played Street Fighter until nearly three in the morning, when we decided to sneak out of the apartment and go skating. I lent her one of my skateboards and she drove me in her car, where a little silvery flower was growing in the center console. I pointed at it.

"From Calypso," she said. "But, I can't really grow things."

"Well, it's probably hard to keep things alive when you aren't."

"My thoughts exactly."

I stared at it. "Maybe you can give it to my mom. She's always wanted a garden, and she's crazy good at growing things."

"That's a good idea," Tempest admitted, parking her car in an alley. "Alright. Do we know anybody at this skate park?"

I glanced at it as we walked across the street. "No. At least... I don't think so."

"Nobody from your school?"

"I dunno. I never finished my orientation," I reminded her. I was just lucky Paul even put in a good word for me and that I was even allowed back at Goode. At least Rachel would be there, though.

"Well, I guess we'll find out." She had to raise her voice as we got closer. A bunch of kids were blasting some sort of hip-hop music and dancing towards the back while a bunch of other kids were just skating like usual. "You want a snack? I see elote."

"What's that?"

Tempest just grinned. "I'll go get us some." She walked off, digging in her pocket for the endless amounts of cash she carries. I just rolled my eyes at her and threw my skateboard down and kicked off.

Everything was fine, really. The line for the weird elote stuff was long, so Tempest had to wait for a while while I skated. It was really muggy that night, which isn't always very fun, but I liked the feeling of the wind in my ears as I drifted around.

"Boy!" I stopped and lifted my skateboard up at the sound of Tempest's voice. She held up two styrofoam cups and I walked over to her.

I stared at it. It was a weird mix of mayo, corn, and cheese, and I smelled some line. Tempest's had chili powder on it and she mixed it up rapidly.

I surveyed it. "What... What is it?"

"It's a Mexican snack," she told me. "Try it. It's very good. You have to stir it, first."
