TEMPEST

"You aren't supposed to leave camp without authorization," Grover told me.
I popped a caramel in my mouth and leaned against a log, which Grover happened to be sitting on just a few feet away. "I don't believe in authorization."
"Why don't you just tell Annabeth you like her?" Grover questioned, nearly done weaving a crown of dandelions.
"It's... complicated," I muttered. I knew that I liked Annabeth a whole lot, but did she like me? Then I realized that even if she did like me, I'd never try to date her. That's not fair to subject a living girl to a doomed relationship with the dead.
Grover finished his crown and began eating it. "I think your haircut looks nice!"
"Thank you, Grover." I was trying to be nice to Grover. He's actually a really sweet guy. A little cowardly at times, sure, but at his core he's genuinely kind and actually very brave. And I trusted him with my feelings in regards to Annabeth. It was easy to talk to him, I realized. Almost like talking to a goat, 'cause you never really get a full answer in reply. Grover's a little like that. He tries to help me out, but he doesn't really ever know what to do. It's just nice to know he's listening and that he won't be evil about it.
Ugh, I can't stand caring about other people now. I blame Anne.
The sun began dipping down, which meant it was time for me to meet her at Half-Blood Hill. I bid farewell to Grover, and he thanked me a million more times for all the water bottles. I know tin cans are his favorite, but I don't have a whole lot of those on hand. Water bottles are easier to find laying around.
I got to Thalia's tree first, so I sat down and patiently waited for her. I glanced up at the glittering Golden Fleece- that I had helped recover, which was weird to think about- and the guard dragon, Peleus, wrapped around the tree trunk. Part of me wanted to reach out again. Maybe try to restore my vitality like it did for Thalia. But I knew my hand would pass right through as though the Fleece was a hologram.
No- The Fleece isn't the hologram. I am.
"Tempest?"
I picked my head up and rose, staring at Annabeth. She'd let her hair down and parted it right down the middle, so her glossy curls framed her face just right. She wore a simple grey coat and blue jeans, and had a red beanie in her hand for when we left the camp's barriers. I noticed her nails were filed and painted dark blue, matching the lapis lazuli on the ring I gave her. She had on those owl earrings her dad gave her, plus a little silver necklace that brought attention to her collarbones.
Not that I was looking there. Wait, that's a lie. I hope Styx doesn't try to smite me.
Her eyelashes batted gently as I said, "Oh. Hi."
"Hi." She shifted awkwardly and looked down, which made her look quite cute if I'm being honest. "Is Argus driving us?"
"No," I replied. "We're hooking a cab. Follow me."
Anne squinted, but she followed me past Peleus. "Did you get permission for this?"
I didn't answer her. "Your hair looks nice."
