You lunge forward and push yourself over the rock, landing between Vash and the man with the gun. Two bullets hit your leg through and through. Praying that Vash is still alive, you look at the shooter with rage. What can you do? You don't have your knife, and you didn't pick up the boy's either.
"Move aside!" The man growls. His gun is pointed at you, and his other hand is holding the woman hostage. "I'll be the one to finish off the Humanoid Typhoon!"
"No!" you shout back. Your mind is racing about what to do.
"Move it or I'll shoot her!" The man turns his gun toward the woman, pressing the barrel against her temple. You hear her crying out.
"Iris..." you hear Vash's weak voice behind you. His hand grabs the back of your shirt, but moments later it falls off. You turn around and see him lying on the ground, eyes closed, his prosthetic dyed red with blood. You hunch over him, covering his unconscious body with yours.
"Move it!" the man shouts. You refuse to let Vash die. It's not an option. But if you don't move, then the woman dies. Vash would be grief-stricken if she died instead of him. So you have to disarm the man. Carefully, you reach for Vash's gun. You've seen him use it enough times to know how it works. Quietly, you look inside. One bullet. You don't trust yourself enough to be able to shoot the gun out of his hand. You might hurt the woman instead. You feel time running out as you prepare the gun.
As you turn around, you see him about to shoot the woman, and with a split second of aiming, you shoot. The bullet hits him in the middle of his chest, and his hand lets go of the woman, who falls forward. He staggers backwards, but you don't see blood. Your hands are trembling while holding out the gun. Things don't happen fast enough. Are you safe now? Is Vash safe? You need to check on him, but you can't take your eyes off the man. Where is the bloodstain? You definitely hit him.
"Interesting..." you hear the man say and laugh. He suddenly collapses with a strange clattering noise. But not in the way you would expect. It's like his body falls apart at the joints. He looks like a pile of firewood on the ground as you stare in shock. You hear more clattering as the woman falls apart, more noise from behind you and from the village. You look around and see piles of what used to be people everywhere; some of them had come closer to watch you. Nothing but body parts are left of them. What is this? Your mind is racing before you decide to take the risk and look over Vash.
You kneel down in front of him and look at his slumped-over figure. His head is lulling on his chest, and as you push his coat away, you see two bleeding wounds in his shoulder. Examining further, you lift away his prosthetic arm to uncover a large and nasty wound across his belly, the blood coming from it forming a puddle on his lap.
"No, Vash! Please!" Your breath catches in your throat, and your fingers go to his neck. You watch him closely as you try to find his pulse. You see the slight movement of his chest and feel relief as you catch the faint pulsing of his vein. You lay him on his back and pull off your shirt. You are well aware that it's not ideal, but it seems like the best idea you have. You pack the wound as well as you can and put pressure on it. Your fingers shake as you manically look around. What would you give to pass your healing factor onto him right now. You move one of his hands onto the wound, and the other arm you throw over your neck as you measure your options. You try your best to roll him into yourself. One of your arms supports his back, and the other is under his legs, crunching him up so that there is pressure on the wound. You know you are strong, but you still manage to surprise yourself with it. You hope your body doesn't fail you now. You struggle to get your feet underneath you as the large and limp form of Vash throws you off balance quite a bit. But you manage to stand up and even walk despite your injured leg screaming in pain. His head rests on your shoulder as you stagger forward, carefully crossing the piles of what is left of the strange people, and go back to the house you had stayed in.
