Vash knows the plan. The two of you had gone over it more than once, weighing the options. Both agreed that he is better at protecting a group of people, and you are better suited to sow destruction in the lab. He is better with people; he should stay with them and guide them to the village where you left your supplies. You will catch up. Vash knows he should leave December with the captives. At this point, you should be wrapping up and following, but his heart is heavy in his chest. He has had doubts about this since the beginning. He knows just how close to home this ordeal hits, and seeing you in that hallway only reassured his thoughts.

He looks at the people sticking together, fear still in their eyes. They are deep in the sewer system; they are safe; they have to be; nobody saw them; he made sure. He has to leave and get these souls to safety, but his legs won't move. His hands form tight fists as he tries to force himself to go forward, but his heart drags him back.

"Stay here. If anyone comes unannounced, head for the exit; it's around the corner. Go up the ladder. I'll be back soon." Vash's mouth speaks on its own as his legs take off the way he had come. He can't leave you behind.

He runs down the metal hallway as quietly as he can. His heart wants to climb out through his throat, the anxiety and nerves taking over. He hopes he will just run into you here in the sewers or on the streets; he hopes you are alright and that you haven't been captured by either the scientists or the military police. He knows you; you will keep your promise—both to stick to the plan and not cause too much harm to people and that you will always come back to him. You keep your word, but still he feels the need to come back to you.

He heaves himself out through the manhole, careful not to get spotted, and hurries along the streets and staircases. He sees the suspended bridge he has to cross, and luck is on his side as nobody seems to be lurking around in the area. He slips in through the door and runs down the hall, the faint buzzing of the alarms reaching his ears. He turns left at the end and kicks down the door leading into the facility. Immediately, the smell of smoke and blood reach his nose and fill him with panic. The red lights blink and the alarm continues, but the rest of the facility is quiet—way too quiet for an emergency situation. He runs down the halls in the direction he saw you last. He looks around, spotting a trail of black ash like substance; it has to be yours. It was probably the same trail he had seen before, but then it was still blood. He looks around, seeing the spot you had stood before among a number of unconscious bodies, but now there was nobody there, just a bit of blood smeared on the ground. He checks out the other hallway and finds your cloak, which he picks up. It is wet due to the water pouring from the ceiling.

He tries to listen, but there are no sounds reaching him that would hold a hint of you. He is confused and scared of what could have happened. He clutches the cloth tight and hurries along, trying to find you. He is too worried to call out your name, unsure of what the current situation is. He comes to a sudden halt as he sees bloody markings on the floor; someone has been dragged along the ground; he sees hand marks like someone was dragged by their feet, maybe; and right next to them is someone who was probably held up by their collar.

Vash's blood runs cold; the flashing red lights turn the blood black, making it look like your blood, but this is different. He follows the trail towards where they seem to lead; he doesn't see the start of them on the other side. With every step, it gets harder to breathe, and he sees the trail ending at a door. He pushes the button by the opening, and as the two sides move apart, the strong smell of blood wafts over him. He blinks his eyes, trying to focus and see into the dark room; there is no white light, just darkness switching with the red warning light. A faint glow from the screens and keyboards along the wall and the shaft of light let in by the open door are all that illuminate the space with other hues. He sees the thick puddle of blood flowing from the pile of bodies. He takes a few steps closer to make sure his eyes aren't playing tricks on him, but indeed, in the far corner, there are bodies one atop the other covered in viscose blood.
