The car moves fast, and the engine blares loudly, explaining why you heard it from so far away. It's a modified pickup, even over the rumbling, you hear the clinking of chains thrown into the back as the car pulls up into town. It comes to a sudden halt in the town square as you and Vash stand side by side on the porch of a house, waiting to see what happens next.

A man in his forties jumps out of the passenger seat, a revised rifle slung across his chest. From the other side, a woman probably just as old as him, steps out. You see two revolvers, one on either hip. Both sport wide brimmed hats and a sinister smile.

"Lookie here, thought this place was abandoned. Think we can take both or should we settle for the girl?" the woman speaks.

"The guy doesn't seem strong, just a lot of limbs. Why just settle for one?" The man looks at Vash with a toothy grin.

This gave you the answer you were looking for: these were not regular people looking for a shelter, these were Snatchers, or at least working with them.

"What would you want with us? We don't need a ride." Vash speaks up a little more loudly than usual, but his tone is light and a bit awkward as he cracks his joke.

"Lucky, they aren't looking for intelligence," the man keeps grinning. "You two are coming with us."

"And what if we don't want to?" Vash continues with the same tone as before.

"We weren't asking, boy," the woman says, taking one of her revolvers as she speaks. "So what's it gonna be? You getting in the back willingly, or do we need to convince you a bit more?"

"Actually, we're thinking about staying here for the night. Thanks!" Vash still pretends like nothing is amiss, but you can sense the tension in him growing.

You see the woman raising her gun, she's fast, but for you, it still looks like she's moving in slow motion. The barrel is aimed at the space between the two of you, and neither of you flinch as the bullet digs itself into the wall behind you.

"Gutsy ones, those two," the woman says, lowering her weapon again.

"We will also accept just one of you, so who volunteers?" The man asks, his fingers creeping closer to the trigger of his gun.

"No, thank you!" you smile at them, your hands ready to pull out your knives from under your cloak, that's flapping in the breeze.

"Alright, we tried to be nice." A grin appears on the woman's face again. "Let's explore other means."

"We would much rather not let this get out of hand," Vash tries to calm the situation. "There is no need for anybody to get hurt. We would much rather have you tell us who you're working for, and we can all go our separate ways."

"As if, noodle boy!" The woman raises her revolver again, pointing it at Vash's guts, but the man beside you has already pulled out his own, his bullet hitting his opponent's half way between the two of them. It seems to take the pair by surprise.

"Who are you?" the man asks in a commanding tone.

"If I answer you, will you tell me who you work for?" Vash's voice is more serious now.

"To Hell with you!" The woman looks enraged and pulls out the other revolver too, ready to empty both into Vash, but you aren't worried. Instead, you set your sights on the man and dash off. You pull out a knife and charge straight at him. He was so focused on Vash that he missed the moment you started running. He raises his rifle to take aim, but fumbles just a second too long, intimidated by you. Before you reach the man, gunshots go off. The woman first aims at Vash, but then turns one barrel towards you. All her shots miss you, and you're sure Vash had no trouble dodging the ones meant for him.
