You are quickly grabbed by the machine gun wielding maniac and thrown into the bank building. You keep your eyes open, mapping out the layout of the room. You see the two armed men pacing around, their guns drawn, ready to act. You spot three hostages sitting underneath a window; some moving shadows indicate that the other one is behind the teller desk. You assume that the one separate from the others is the director's daughter to keep her safe as a last straw in case it does become a shootout.
"Hey boss, I found this foolish girl wanting to wander into the bank; I think she wanted to hand in some money for safekeeping!" The man who captured you laughs as you fall to the ground. You drop the bank notes and keep your eyes on the floor. You shake and whimper, making sure you look as pathetic as possible.
"Is that so..." one of the armed men says, coming closer. "You get back to your post!"
You hear the steps approaching, not lifting your face at all as you still lay on the ground on all fours. Suddenly, your hair is roughly gripped, and your head is pulled up. Your hands reach up to grab the pulling arm and lessen the pain. You are brought face-to-face with an ugly mug. Clearly, he has seen conflict and been in many fights, with his nose broken on numerous occasions. You keep your eyes on him, not daring to possibly alert him to your true motives. Keeping the hateful flame out of your eyes is a challenge. You despise the man in front of you, but you have a singular purpose right now, and that's to protect the four hostages.
"I might keep her once the safe is open; I doubt anyone would miss her, stupid as she seems to be," he sneers in your face. "How sad and pathetic. I like to see scared women. That's how they should be."
He drags you closer to the desk and grabs a length of rope. You let him slosh you around, roughly tossing you against the counter and twisting your arms behind you. He ties your wrists together with the rope, then makes some loops around you and restrains your legs. You are thrown onto the floor to sit with the other three hostages.
You look at your captors; having a clear view does come in handy, as you see that they are wearing military bullet vests, unlike the other three outside. The older, ugly man, who seems to be the leader, paces around. You see his revolver and try to spot any other weaponry, but you can't. The other man is slightly younger; his scrawny physique suggests he isn't much of a close combat fighter and will rely on his gun more, unlike the boss. A cigarette smokes in the corner of the thin man's mouth.
Having gathered all the information you need about your captors and the layout of the room, you keep your eyes down and pull your legs closer, trying to look tiny and helpless while, in actuality, you finesse your knife out from between your belt and your back. It has cut you a little bit, but the adrenaline coursing through you heals the wound immediately. You grip the handle tightly and start by cutting through the rope around your body to give you more mobility. You're careful not to show any movement, hiding the little sawing motions behind shaking.
"What is taking the director so long?!" The boss seems agitated as he paces around. You hear his heavy footsteps by the teller desk. The other man seems to be standing still by the door that leads behind the desk, where the fourth hostage is.
"Psst, are you okay?" the teenage girl to your right asks quietly. You inch slightly closer to her, removing the gap that was between you. You continue the fake shaking even as your hands are free. You lean in more to hide your shoulder, and your hand slips behind the girl to cut through her ropes and press the hilt of your knife into her palm. You feel her suddenly stiffen next to you as she realizes what is happening.
You hide your face more into her neck, so your quiet words only reach her. "Release at least the person next to you. When I jump up, you have to throw yourselves into the little corner to your right; I'll cover you."
