Fear of flying

I am a prisoner of my brain
my chest crushes my organs into place
constricting in my skin
I swallow the mouse bones and all.
We lurch in the sky
to the sound of the beat of drums
turbulence thrums
my ears blow out
overpowered by the sound.
Intruder in the heavens
a prayer in my throat
I am caged by a seatbelt
pinned down in a splay
an insect put on display.
I am lulled to the sound
of the blood rush from my face
fasten your seatbelt
"yes you're safe"
life-vest under your seat
"stop counting the ways your life could end today"
overreact
overestimate
we've touched down
uncover your face.
mutter a thanks
you're safe to fly another day.
