Fourteen years prior, Maylin sat cuddled up on her couch with a nearly four year old y/n. The loud ringing of her cellphone pulled her from the couch leaving the girl to watch alone.

Maylin smiled at her sisters caller ID, expecting to hear all about the gift she'd gone out to buy for her daughters fourth birthday in a few days. The smile that slithered up her features was quickly wiped away as the sinking weight of fear settled into her chest.

Maylins knuckles turned white from the vice like grip she had on the phone as a police officer informed her of an accident, not telling her further information. She knew. She felt it in her gut, if her sister was okay they'd tell her but they gave her basically no information whatsoever.

Maylin hung up, shoving the phone in her pocket with shaky hands. Panic bubbled beneath the surface threatening to show but she shoved it down for the sake of the little girl on the couch.

She threw on her coat and shoes before kneeling down in front of y/n messily tying shoes to the girls feet. "Aunty Maymay where are we going?" The girls squeaky voice grounded her Aunt from the chaotic thoughts of what could've possibly happened. "We need to go somewhere quickly.. let's put on your coat." Y/n scrunched her face up "aww but I want to watch tv!" Maylin forced a smile "please sweetie, it's important that we leave now. I'll explain later okay?" The little girl nodded and pulled her jacket on sensing the tension and panic brewing in her Aunts voice.

The drive was tense. No music. No talking. She drove a bit faster than usual  and pulled into the police station parking lot with a screeching halt. "Why are we at the police?" Maylin swallowed the lump in her throat as the two strode inside "I don't know"

A child protective services worker brought y/n to a small room with toys and a tv while Maylin followed an officer into a separate room. Another officer slipped in behind them as she sat down "You are Maylin L/n correct?"

Maylin nodded feeling the panic rise quicker and quicker. "We're here to deliver some bad news, so please prepare yourself." Her body went rigid, face paling understanding where he was going with this "You're sister Nari L/n died in a domestic violence situation this evening." Maylin choked on a sob. Her sister was.. "what do you mean?! Domestic violence?" The officers lips pursed into a tight thin line "It was discovered, due to a noise complaint.. your sister died from injuries inflicted by Jonathan Dillon who was arrested on the scene."

Maylin heaved out a grief stricken cry, burying her face into her hands. He hurt her?! How long had he been doing this? How hadn't she noticed? Did he hurt y/n too? Her mind raced and her lungs hurt from hyperventilating, it felt like there was a gaping hole in her chest. Her sister, best friend and only family had been ripped away from her by this evil man.

The officer slid a box of tissues closer to her "I am so sorry for your loss mam, is there someone I can call?" She nodded and pulled herself from her devastation long enough to write a name and number on a pink sticky note at the desk with her trembling hands.

He took the number and handed it to the other officer in the room "please go call this person and notify them of the circumstances." The officer nodded and left with the sticky note in hand. Maylin wailed in such a broken pained voice that would haunt the officer before her.

She took a few deep breaths before mumbling out the words "what happens to my niece?" The officer furrowed his brows "the court will give custody to a family member." She nodded, tears still steaming heavily from her eyes, shoulders shaking as she tried to contain her hysterical sobs.

"I'm the only remaining family, so I..do I just bring her home?" The officer nodded "yes, everything can be taken care of at a later date but for now you will assume custody of her until then."
