LEVI
The moment of quiet encounter with you during lunch lingered in Levi's mind, each one a puzzle piece in the intricate tapestry of your shared existence within the camp. His musings meandered through the shadows of the past, the present casting a stark light upon the complexities of the unprecedented connection.
Levi Ackerman, once humanity's strongest soldier, now found himself grappling with the aftermath of injury, a silent testament to the fragility of pride and dignity. And still, Doctor Keith's silence regarding your existence only added to the enigma, leaving Levi to wonder how he could have missed you amidst the bustling life of the camp.
Avoidance became a silent dance throughout that day, each step carefully choreographed to maintain a respectful distance. Your presence, a specter haunting the edges of his consciousness, held a power he could not fully comprehend. And as much as he hated to admit it, it irked him.
In the quiet of his tent, amid the pages of Jaegerist history books, Levi found himself confronted by the echoes of his former life, the weight of his injuries a constant reminder of his humanity.
Throughout the last three years, he had taken on a habit of reading through the hyperbolic descriptions in those books: the strategic, patriotic lies Levi could debunk in an instant. Yet, there was something inadmittedly comforting in them. A perfect lie, he would think to himself.
The evening air beckoned, a whisper of possibility amidst the confines of Levi's solitude. He made the conscious choice to leave his tent and get some much needed fresh air. As he slowly wheeled, he observed some refugees eating and drinking by a bonfire.
This was no rare occurence at the camp: aside from the monthly bonfire nights (usually filled with booze and music), members of the camps periodically ran fires to gather company and comfort.
Amidst them folks was Jelena, who waived at Levi excitedly. Her invitation, though well-intentioned, only served to underscore the divide between Levi and the world around him. The heaviness of gazes, the unspoken expectations, weighed heavily upon his shoulders as he turned away, retreating into the sanctuary of his tent once more.
Levi did not enjoy large groups of people, particularly people he didn't know in depth. And even though it had been years since it all went down, he still deeply disliked Jelena.
Yet, fate had other plans, it seemed, as the evening unfolded in unexpected ways. Levi suddenly recalled the view from the spot Jelena had suggested weeks prior, so he changed direction.
______
The stunning view offered a breathtaking panorama of the sunset, with the sun almost gone in the horizon. A riot of colors dancing across the sky as the night arrived in quietness.
And there, across the river, were you, a figure bathed in the fading light. You were sitting facing the water, your body firmly placed on the grass.
He recognized your hair and it's deep color. The color of your skin, as it peekee through the separation between your shirt and skirt. The small of your back was slightly exposed, and in that instant, Levi understood what sensuality was.
Subtleness.
Levi's approach was hesitant, a silent acknowledgment of the unspoken tension that hung between you.
'Captain Levi', you let out as you turned yourself around. Your eyes met him instantly.
'Ex-captain.'
Your response was clipped by just a furrow of your brows, a reflection of the unease that simmered beneath the surface of everything you were, everything you could possibly be.
Levi's unchacteristic attempts at conversation felt stilted and died on his tongue, the weight of his own insecurities casting a shadow over the interaction. Yet, there was something in your gaze, a spark of defiance that intrigued him, drawing him closer despite himself.
In the silence that followed, Levi found himself drawn to the details of your presence—the curve of your cheek, the tension in your brow—each one a testament to the stories etched upon your skin.
Your fear was palpable, a mirror to his own, yet there was something else there, a resilience that spoke of battles fought and scars borne. Levi silently wondered what your story was.
'Do I scare you, kid?'
'I'm not a kid.'
The exchange held a quiet intensity, a meeting of souls in the fading light of day with undeniable friction and tension. He looked away for some moments, the eye contact feeling too vulnerable, too striking for his liking. Then, cautiously looked back at you, your deep gaze still lingering on his.
'It's Levi,' he corrected.
It was a gentle reminder of the humanity that lingered beneath the facade of titles and reputations. And back in your eyes, Levi saw a reflection of his own doubts, a shared understanding that transcended words.
You nodded curtly, then quietly retreated into the fading light as you began walking away from him. Levi watched, a sense of longing stirring within him. The distance between you, though physical, felt somehow insurmountable, a reminder of the chasm that separated you both.
'It's just Levi,' he called after you, a whisper carried on the evening breeze.
His low voice made you stop yourself in your tracks. And in that moment, amidst the quiet of the evening, with both of you not even facing each other, Levi found himself reaching across the divide, a tentative bridge forged in the fragile moments of connection.
Why did he have the impulse to say such a thing? To expose himself as a mere person, not a shadow of a captain, or a cripple. A living, breathing person. Why was he so quietly desperate for you to see him for who he was? When it felt just so desarming.
'It's (Y/N)' you murmured softly as you turned around. Just before you disappeared into the gathering shadows, he turned to face you. Levi was left with the echo of your name lingering in the air.
His breath caught at the sound of your name, a whisper that lingered in the air long after you had gone, leaving him to contemplate the significance of the encounter.
