LEVI'S POV

The following days are met with unmeasurable distance between you and Levi. Every day feels like an exact replica of the previous one. Sleep. Train. Eat. Train. Repeat. And the midnight meetings continue as the group is constantly in need of updates and reassurance.

Three days go by, and Levi notices a new batch of trainee Jaegerist soldiers come in. He wonders, as he observes them silently - could they possibly be Historia's soldiers? How and when should you all be pushing people's buttons in order for a fight to happen? How could he do that discreetly?

The answer comes to him naturally, like most things do. It is a Friday. New trainees are becoming more familiar with the rest of the cadets. It's strange; the sense of nostalgia Levi feels as he observes the young, idealistic bodies that fill out the newest Jaegerist's uniforms.

He can't help but wonder: was he ever that naive? He ponders silently, reminiscing back of when he first joined the Survey Corps, many years ago. Was it really hidden optimism? Hope? What had driven him into making that choice? Was it revenge? Or anger, perhaps? So many years had gone by, and still, Levi couldn't quite tell.

For some reason, that Friday felt different. The distance that had been slowly building between you and Levi exhausted him. Deep down, he understood why you were pushing him away.

Still, it killed him. Seeing you train, seeing you eat at the same table he would be sitting at. Going to your room every single night, yet not being able to share your bed. It was excruciating, yet his empathy for you would still persevere.

Levi Ackerman knew that there was nothing in this world he desired more than your happiness. And knowing you had little time left kept him awake at night, more than any other dark, intrusive thought had before. He could only imagine how you were feeling.

Anger came in waves, though. Levi would feel a deep, sharp pain within his chest whenever you two held eye contact for seconds too long. And so, anger became an easier feeling for Levi to endure. He knew anger, he understood it. Pain and sadness... he tried to push away. Those feelings were more than what he could handle.

Even if he understood you, Levi still felt so mad, so infuriated with the cold distance you had created between the two of you, he could barely focus on anything else.

It happened during dinner. The new cadets were louder, younger. Just excited to be there. As the group was having dinner, Levi took note of how you all ate in silence and observed the new trainees.

He looked over at Jean and Connie. God, how their expressions had changed throughout the years. There was so much more knowledge, so much more wisdom behind their eyes.

Mikasa, on the other hand, held the tenderness only those who had seen the worst in the world could behold behind their eyes. Levi had silently worried about her for years. More than he would ever admit to himself. But he knew she had Jean. And Jean was a good man.

Before Levi could continue quietly gazing at you all, hoping for some sort of reaction on your behalf specifically, his thoughts were abruptly interrupted by the sudden sound of an unknown voice.

'Hey! Good to meet you all!', a tall, blonde man approached your table.

He was one of the new cadets, Levi had not seen him before. He had a solemn look in his eye as he greeted the group. Something about him looked familiar to Levi, his sight almost comforting to him.
