When I saw Akira approaching me, I immediately disconnected the call. I straightened my posture and took a breath of air. The lump in my throat denied the entry of the precious oxygen.

She wouldn’t come near me unless she had a valid reason or something to say, so I suddenly felt anxious.

I've been in the living room for some time now, following Bran's exhaustion-induced slumber after all the activities we have engaged in since last night.

I noticed that she had just finished taking a bath because her hair was still slightly damp. As she walked past me, the scent of the moisturizer and shampoo she had applied lingered in the air. The scent of almond and honey, instead of the usual vanilla or lavender in her daily perfume, invaded my senses.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to calm my nerves.

Taking the empty seat beside me on the sofa, she fixed her gaze on my laptop resting on the glass table. I remained silent and patiently waited for her to tell me what she needed.

“Bakit mo pinatay ang tawag? Tapos na ba kayo mag-usap?”

I was stunned for a moment, but then I nodded. Noticing her dissatisfaction, I eventually broke the silence and spoke. “It was one of the interns. She just asked about something.”

She nodded and fell silent again. Her silence did nothing to alleviate my nervousness, as it only increased the tension in my chest.

She cradled a throw pillow in her lap and persistently tapped her fingers on it. Occasionally, she would also sneak glances in my direction.

“What is it?” I asked.

She blinked twice. “Ha? Ano ’yon?”

“What do you want to say to me?”

Hugging the pillow in her lap, she straightened up and sat facing me. It seemed like we were about to engage in a lengthy conversation, and she was ready to listen to whatever I had to say.

“Tell me…” I gulped as she spoke. She stared at me.  My eyes darted nervously at her. “I want you to tell me the truth. When and how did we first meet?”

My mind drifted away. I wasn’t anticipating that question. I found myself speechless as I pondered my response.

She had that kind of look again, sort of like a curious cat. But I wouldn’t consider comparing her to a cat though. Maybe a lioness would be more fitting.

“Oh, ano na?” She said because I just kept staring into her deep and dark brown eyes. She was murmuring something to herself, which made her dimples peek out, and I was tempted to poke them with my fingers.

Her dimples are like a switch button of something inside my chest, and I want to press them to shut it off.

“Why are you curious about it?”

“Kasi naman…” She tapped a finger against her chin and sighed. “Isn’t it obvious that I want to know because I haven’t been able to sleep well thinking about that for a few nights? Kuya Dante is also familiar with me, but I don’t remember how we met or what happened between us. Tell me, did I do something bad or hilarious to you before? Aside from…you know. O kung ano man ’yon sabihin mo na para matahimik ang kaluluwa ko. Hindi naman kita naging boyfriend o naging kalandian kasi kung oo bakit ko naman makalilimutan ang mukhang yan?”

She kept on talking without a break, so when she stopped, she was still a little out of breath. Her frustration was evident as her entire face was red and her mouth seemed to erupt with flames.
