The moon hung high in the night sky, casting a silvery glow over the palace grounds. In the heart of the kitchen, Pander, immersed in his late-night baking duties, found himself startled as Evie, like a mischievous spirit, materialised out of the shadows. The surprise caused a cascade of flour to rain down, covering Evie in a powdery white veil.
Rather than erupting in frustration, Evie responded with infectious laughter.
"Oh my goodness, Princess Evelina, I am so sorry!" Pander stuttered, attempting to wipe her baby pink nightgown with a tablecloth.
"That's okay, darling..." Evie smiled, admiring Pander's clumsiness. "Say...what's your name again?"
"Pander..."
"Oh, like that cuddly animal, Panda?"
"No...well...yes but, spelt differently"
"That's adorable"There was an awkward silence between the pair. Evie hated awkward silences, because it made her nervous. So in order to stop the conversation drying up, she continued talking.
"Hey there, Pander. Couldn't help but notice your intriguing vibes. What keeps you up at night?"
Pander pulled out a nearby stool and sat opposite the princess, who looked charming in her baby pink nightgown which complimented her perfect physique, with her brown hair cascading down her back in a loose braid.
He cleared his throat before responding, "Well, hello, Evelina. Just the usual thoughts and wonders whilst baking snickerdoodles. How about you?"
"Oh, you know, the stars and the mysteries of the universe. But mostly, I struggle to find a peaceful sleep." Evie confessed, kicking her feet slowly like a bored child, taking in the warm atmosphere of the kitchen."That's a shame. Have you ever considered visiting the Night Village Fair? It has this magical touch that might just solve your sleepless nights."
"Night Village Fair? That sounds enchanting! Tell me more."Pander stood up and began to pace in circles around Evie, as if trying to manifest her wild imagination. "Picture this: a moonlit village...um... twinkling lights, music that... dances with the breeze. It's like a dream come true. I think it might be the remedy for your restless nights."
Evie began to bounce up and down in her chair. Her big brown pupils dilated excitedly and a wicked grin spread across her face. "You had me at "moonlit village." I'm in! When is this magical fair, and do they have shooting stars on the menu?""The Night Village Fair opened its gates about an hour ago. And as for shooting stars, let's just say they have a tendency to make special appearances." Pander whispered with a wink.
"A date under the stars? Count me in, Pander. I have a feeling this fair might just be the cure for my insomnia, and who knows, maybe for something else too." Evelina smirked, slowly twirling a string on Pander's apron around her finger and gazing into his eyes, leaving him dazed and hypnotised by her charm.
"All...Alright then..um...we have to go now, I don't wanna wake anyone up and have them notice..."
"Hold on, Pander! Sweet mother of heavens, let a girl change first!"
"Change?! Evelina, you can't get changed now! What if someone sees you?!"
"Oh, they will not. Odie sleeps like a bear in hibernation, and as for Isa, she snores so loud, she won't even hear my footsteps, I promise!" Evie yelled back, running for the door.Pander's heart raced with a mix of excitement and anxiety as he waited for Evie to change into her Night Fair disguise. The furtive nature of their escapade, coupled with Pander's secret crush on Evie and the stark contrast between her royalty and his commoner status as the head baker's grandson, amplified his nervousness. Every rustle of fabric and creak of the floorboards felt like an alarm, heightening his fear of being caught.
After what felt like forever, Evie finally descended down the stairs, looking like an angel. She had swapped her soft pink nightgown into a baby blue floral dress which fell just above her knees. Her wavy brown hair was freed from the braid and was tied into two high pigtails above her head, making her look much younger than eighteen. Her makeup was soft, making her look like the delicate doll that she was infamous for.
