The aftermath of the big secret plunged the palace into a prolonged period of gloom. The KodaCait kingdom faced the rainiest thirty days it had ever experienced. A torrential downpour created a rhythmic percussion on surfaces. Relentless winds accompanied the rain, causing trees to sway and loose objects to be carried away. Lightning streaked across the darkened sky, illuminating the tumultuous scene. The storm's impact, with its gusty winds and sheets of rain, left the surroundings soaked and destroyed.
Posy, grappling with the weight of her newfound identity, withdrew from her biological parents and from her entire family, finding solace only in the depths of her own solitude. She barricaded herself in her room, shutting out the world. Even Bea couldn't understand the immense pain her sister felt.
"Posy, what's going on? Are you okay? Is everything alright?" Bea asked her, sitting gently next to Posy.
Turning away from her, Posy scowled, "It's nothing, Bea. Just leave me alone."
"Come on, Posy. You can tell me. We're sisters."
"I just... I can't shake the feeling that I'm a mistake. A worthless mistake." Posy sighed, tears blurring her vision, "Everyone has something special about them. Isa is...angelic, Odie is loved by everyone, Evie is charming and funny, Mari is gorgeous, you're talented and everyone knows it, the twins are adorable...and me? I'm nothing!"
"Posy, you're not a mistake. Don't say that about yourself." Bea spoke softly.
"But my real father, the king, left me at the orphanage to save his precious reputation. I'm just a burden."
"Maybe there's more to the story, Posy. People make mistakes, but it doesn't define you."
Posy turned to Bea with a scornful look, her voice full of bitterness, "Define me? Look around, Bea! I'm the ugly duckling among us all."
"Posy, that's not true. You're beautiful in your own way."
Her fists clenched, Posy's voice grew louder and more infuriated, "Beautiful? Do you see how people treat me? You and the rest of our sisters get the best treatment because you guys are pretty. I always get the leftovers. 'You're beautiful in your own way' is what ugly people say when they want to feel better about themselves!"
"Posy, life is tough for everyone here. It's not about being pretty."
"Don't you get it, Bea? It is about being pretty! They get more compliments, more boys, they get more attention, and I'm always left behind. Why can't I be more like Isa or Odie? I don't think I've ever seen a blemish on those two in my life and everything they do is just so perfect! Even our parents pay more attention to Isa and Odie!"
Feeling stunned by Posy's rage, Bea still attempted to reason with her, "Posy, I know it's hard, but shutting everyone out won't make it better."
"I don't need your pity, Bea. I don't need anyone. I'm done trying to fit in where I clearly don't belong."
Bea hung her head in defeat as she slowly left the room to give Posy her space to deal with her emotions. Her heart was heavy seeing Posy in such distress.
The other four adopted girls, caught in the crossfire of familial discord, struggled with the awkwardness of navigating a divided household. They didn't know how to address and approach the other members of their family, leaving them isolated and vulnerable. Honeybelle, a pillar of support in the past, remained absent and refused to come to work, further accentuating the fractured dynamics within the family. Now that Isa was busy comforting her mother, Odie- being the second oldest- took on the responsibility of caring for the twins.
