Chapter 53

Taeyong cracks open Haechan's door, peeking his head in to make sure he's asleep. He goes downstairs, a guest is waiting for him but he runs into Sungchan.

Sungchan bows before walking past him but Taeyong stops him.

"Hey, I haven't seen you in awhile." Taeyong says.

"I've been spending more time with my parents. I'm just trying to distract myself from. . . Everything that's been happening." Sungchan says with a bit of a nervous laugh.

"I get that. It's been rough lately. You deserve to spend time with your parents. Have a good night, Sungchan." Taeyong says, sympathetically.

Sungchan leaves, heading upstairs. Taeyong heads outside to the backyard. As soon as he steps outside he gets a whiff of a warm vanilla scent. Following the comforting scent, he finds Chanyeol sitting at the table with a lit candle.

"I'm glad you're finally talking to me." Chanyeol smiles.

Taeyong sits down. "Well, I had no choice. Your brother is in Switzerland and I'm here. . .bored and temporarily in charge." He says.

"I bet the others are mad you've been left in charge." Chanyeol chuckles, Taeyong chuckling too.

"It's been interesting but kind of sad with all these deaths."

"Sorry about that. . ." Chanyeol murmurs.

"It's okay." Taeyong fiddles with the pendant around his neck for a while. Chanyeol notices and softly smiles. It's so evident that Taeyong really misses Johnny.

"You know. . .a lot of fathers have been showing up and-"

"It reminds you of yours, doesn't it?"

Taeyong pauses for a second. Saying it out loud hits harder than just thinking about it. He nervously laughs as he shifts in his chair. "What? No! I mean. . .I guess." He sighs. His awkward smile starts to fade into a frown.

Chanyeol stares at him with a knowing look.

"A little bit. It just makes me wonder what me and my dad would have been like today. Would he. . .like me?" Taeyong questions.

"I'm sure he'd be proud of you." Chanyeol says but Taeyong disagrees.

"No. . .he never had any expectations from me. He never really saw me." He explains.

Taeyong sat at the dining table, practically drooling as his father placed each bowl and plate on the table.

"You're telling me Taesung and your mom locked you in the closet and starved you?" His father asked.

Taeyong frantically nodded, praying his father believed him. Though, it seemed like he believed him but the look on his face tells Taeyong he most likely won't do anything about it.

His father finally sat down with him, allowing Taeyong to finally dig in. He's devouring the food, eating like he hasn't been fed in 10 years. Which technically is true in a way, being starved the whole day and finally having his first meal at 11PM.

His father just scoffed, potentially fondly.

They ate in silence for a while. His father stared at him, making him slow down and look up with curiosity.

"Taeyong-ah,"

"Yes?

"Don't worry too much. It's not like me and your mom have any faith in you,"
