MAXS CONFESSION WAS A WEEK AGO NOW. Ella still hadn't moved past it, and Max hadn't spoken about it again. She wasn't surprised by this, though she knew they needed to talk about it. But they were both very stubborn people, and would rather die than start the conversation.
So for now they would only speak when necessary, Antonella watched the race with an ache in her chest. She had spoken to Max's teammate - Sergio - who had unfortunately crashed on the first lap of his home race. He seemed disappointed in himself, but Ella only spoke to him for five minutes.
Max had driven amazingly all weekend. It annoyed Ella to see him so successful when she was so angry at him. It was petty - she knew that. But she couldn't help it.
She was shocked that Max had suggested the three of them went out for dinner. Ella didn't know what he was playing at, the three of them hadn't went out for dinner since Max's birthday. Max and Ella barely talked, any conversation was dependant on Millie.
She often found Max staring at her longingly, but generally chose to ignore it. He had said some shocking things, and the brunt of it was that Max didn't want to be friends with her, he couldn't risk catching feelings. So why did he still look at her as if nothing else mattered?
During the car journey from the restaurant to the hotel, Millie asked her father to put the radio on, and the girls sang to the music.
Back at the hotel, Ella put Millie to bed and packed her bag ready to return to Monaco tomorrow morning. She cleaned the kitchen to save her some chores tomorrow, and organised the dining table so it was as it was when they first arrived at the hotel.
"Do you want to watch Kardashians?" Max offered, suddenly, Ella was slightly taken aback. She had just finished cleaning and was going to go straight to bed in her separate room. She walked through from the kitchen to the living room.
"We're not friends, remember?" She sassed, out of pettiness. Her eyebrow was raised at him, Max stood from where he was sat on the couch, he slowly walked towards her. "What if I don't wanna be friends?"
"I know Max. You made that abundantly clear." She sighed, she was sick of it to be honest. She turned to leave Max's hotel room to her own. "Let me rephrase," he laughed slightly, moving closer to her, he gently grabbed her arm and stopped her in the doorway. "What if I want to be more than just friends?" He asked softly, his eyes looking down on her lips. Ella sighed.
"Make up your mind, Max." she said coldly, but Max could see the hurt in her eyes. She brushed him off of her, and returned to her hotel room silently. Leaving Max stood in the doorway full of regret. She wanted to say more, she wanted to tell him to get his shit together; but was worried about being insensitive.
She understood, Max was afraid. She was too. She didn't have feelings for Max, but she did value their 'friendship' and she respected him as a boss. She didn't want to lose that. And she wouldn't want to be in his position, if she realised she was in love with Max Verstappen she wasn't sure what she would do. The more she thought about it, she wondered what her feelings for Max were. Perhaps they weren't strictly professional, or even just friendly. But she knew she wasn't in love with him, like Max had claimed to be.
Max knew she was right. He had to make up his mind. Did he want to forget his feelings for Ella and move on? Or did he want to be with her properly? He wasn't sure, everything was so difficult and delicate. If they did get together, there would be immense pressure. But things couldn't stay as they were now, Max knew that. He was miserable, and he was also making Ella miserable. He couldn't remember the last time he heard her laugh or watched her smile with her eyes. He missed her a lot, and he had been through hell these past few weeks.
All he could think about was what his father said to him in the Netherlands. What if he was right? What if Ella was like Amalia, and would rob him blind? What if Ella finally got what she wanted? Max had fallen for her, but her reaction hadn't suggested that Ella had been hoping for this. Max was overthinking greatly. But he was at his most vulnerable. And he had been used before.
She's trying to weasel her way into your rich and famous lifestyle and this ridiculous nanny job gave her a way to do it!
Deep down Max knew Ella would never use him or Millie, but he was scared. He didn't know what he wanted, and he had no one to talk to that truly understood. Nico had just told him to go for it with Ella, and kiss her the next time he had the chance. Max had had many chances previously to kiss Antonella, but had never taken them.
Maybe next time he would... Just to know where they stood. Or was that a bad idea?
