We crashed and ended up having to get Cody out of the gunship. He had internal damage, not an easy heal for me, especially because the Bad Batch kept trying to find out what I was doing.
Ultimately, I was able to heal Cody while they defended us using one of their tactics. It was fun to watch, and I managed to get Cody's damage under control, but he was too weak to fight.
I bit my lip while giving Cody to Rex; if I used my powers like that all the time, Vial will surely find me. So many drawbacks to using powers, line being stabbed in the back, or people being afraid of me, trust issues, death, loss of energy... it was already too much to think about. Plus, I hadn't used them in a while.
Although, I wasn't really sure that Vial could track me through my magic; I just assumed he could.
However, giving strength is not one of my capabilities, so it's usually better for them to recover. We decided that leaving the crash sight would be most productive. We had already called in an evac for Cody.
I heard Hunter and Tech talking about me.
Hunter said, "I can't figure her out, do what you can."
Tech just responded with an "affirmative."
Great, I was being watched now, it was to be expected.
We took shelter in a forest, had a discussion about Hunter's special trait, and stopped Jesse, Wrecker, and Crosshair from getting into a fight. I quickly realized that there could be a lot of tiffs like this. We needed to get to the centre fairly quickly if we were to stay on task.
We decided to take an outpost on the way there and we were beginning to set up for the final part of the mission. We needed to find out more about this algorithm.
"Y/n, you're gonna need to cover the regs. Got it?" Hunter ordered, I nodded and waited for the signal.
"Those reinforcements will be here, just about, now." Tech said, gaze fixed on data pad.
"Right, is everyone in position?" Rex asked through comms, and after a few "affirmatives" Rex gave the signal.
We converged on all sides on the droids and began to pick them off. I, of course, was right in the middle of all the action, right in front of the centre.
However, I knew Hunter and Tech were getting inside the centre to access the algorithm.
We just had to wait until we were ready to leave. Unfortunately, it didn't look like we would be leaving any time soon.
"I require assistance!" Tech yelled through the comms, we heard blaster fire in the background. "Now would be great!"
"I'm on my way." I returned, running into the centre.
Typical separatists, everything in here was junky.
When I was about to reach the main system I could see Tech's problem, the whole hallway was backed up with droids. I took them out from the back, making a successful surprise attack.
Though, reaching the room was not as difficult as I thought it would be.
When I reached the room, despite the look Tech was giving me, I could tell he was grateful. He however, was more focused on his injury, he had a blaster wound in his right shoulder. Right near where his joint was; it was definitely something he needed to be high functioning.
"Hmph, a hundred percent success rate indeed..." I smirked.
I knelt down beside him, and examined his wound, he flinched and winced at first, but he eventually stopped. I did not know whether to use magic to heal his wound, or something else.
I decided that maybe he could keep a secret, and even if he didn't the only people he would probably tell was his squad.
"Can you keep a secret?" I said suddenly, moving my hands to his wound.
I could tell that hurt him; I tried not to grip it too tightly.
"Yes, but I fail to see..." he stopped as soon as he watched me use magic, he frowned at me.
"Don't tell anyone." I stood up quickly, knocking something over.
I had an embarrassed look on my face as I kicked what I knocked over aside. I held out my hand for him to take; he hesitated, at first, but took my hand. Honestly, I was surprised he would take it at all.
"Tech! What is going on up there, are you and y/n alright?" Hunter ushered through the comms.
"We are fine, we do not require and further assistance." Tech responded quickly, glancing at his data pad.
I felt my eyes tearing up as I turned away from him. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I had not expected anything like this to happen.
I caught a glance of him. He looked confused by my sudden move of emotion.
"I'll tell you about it later, you're whole squad if you want, but please. Don't. Tell. Rex." I sighed and turned to him.
He held my gaze and nodded; I could see his empathy behind his gaze. I could also tell there were hints of curiosity, something that I often find myself emitting.
"Now let's get this algorithm uncovered." I smiled, wiping my eyes.
"Let's?" Tech asked as he walked over to his data pad.
"Yeah, you and me, it'll be faster." I responded.
It was faster, even though the moment was tense with silence.
"What're you two doing in here?" Rex came in suddenly.
I jumped slightly, "uh- we're accessing the algorithm, duh."
"Ah, right..." Rex responded.
Honestly, what did he think we were doing?
"No way... This can't be possible." I breathed, typing on a keyboard faster.
"What?" Rex asked, alarmed.
"That signal..." Tech whispered.
"It sounds, almost... Almost human." Tech and I said at the same time.
We exchanged a glance, I laughed, and I could tell he smirked. He must not be used to someone being able to recall information like him.
"Tech, ask it something, ask it who or what it is." Rex ordered.
Tech turned quickly and typed on the keyboard.
"This one's audible." He pressed a button.
A mechanical voice sounded, "CT-1409." It repeated, "CT-1409." Over and over.
Rex and I exchanged glances, "that's... Not possible." I whispered at a loss for words.
"That's, Echo's number." Rex breathed, we exchanged another glance.
Tech watched us silently, and said nothing at first, "what does that number mean?"
I was about to speak when Hunter flew past the door behind us, "we've got to go!"
"I'll tell you when we escape, okay?" I said quickly taking out my daggers.
We assumed a quick line with me covering the back with my shield. I had enough time to figure out how to do that before the separatists closed in from behind us. I was glad to be at the back so nobody could see what I was doing.
We quickly escaped and met up with Crosshair who was waiting with a vehicle.
"You do know how to drive this thing right?" Hunter asked cautiously.
"How hard can it be?" I said as Crosshair opened his mouth, "vroom vroom."
I earned a couple laughs for that one.
