This book takes place in the mid 2000s, specifically 2013 .

I stood by the car as my parents continued to converse, we were supposed to be gone long over twenty minutes ago. Church had let out and we were supposed to be on the way home.

Aside from being irritated by the 100-degree weather, I was hungry. My stomach was growling and my parents showed no signs of leaving. You would think I'd be used to this considering it happened every Sunday— but that mattered none, I was still in a bad mood.

I scrolled on my phone to pass the time. "You look mad." Nate approached me with a smile. I chuckled, "Try irritated." I said as he stood near me.

He shook his head staring ahead at the older folks who were laughing and talking like they weren't going to see each other for a while. "They never shut up do they?" He joked

"Not at all." I shook my head.

"What's up wit you." He leaned on the car.

"You know, school and work. Nothing really, hoping something exciting finally happens in my life." I admitted. He gave me a smirk, "Why? You on ya dramatic shit again?" He asked.

"Let's see... I have only one friend, I've never experienced drinking, smoking, or having a boyfriend. My life is lame. I'd probably die a virgin." I sucked my teeth.

"You don't need a lot of friends, more friends more problems. Drinking and smoking can lead to addiction if you don't know what you're doing. And you can always get a boyfriend, you're beautiful." He had an answer for all of my problems.

I rolled my eyes, "Yeah whatever." I looked up, moving my gaze from my shoes to my parents who were finally done talking. Nate no longer leaning said, "See you around and stop trying to change. You different for a reason." He smirked before walking away.

"See you around..."

Finally, in the cool AC, I sat back as we pulled out of the parking lot. "I saw you talking to Nate." My mom said making me chuckle, "It's not what you're thinking." I shook my head.

"Why? You don't like him? He's handsome and he's nice." She said. "Maybe you should date him," I said making my dad glare at me through the rearview mirror.

"I'm serious." She said. I knew she was, she was always pushing me to date but the only guys I knew were nerdy, too churchy or just not my type.

"He's not my type," I stated plainly. "Your type? What's your type?" She looked back with a quizzical look on her face.

"Not Nate." Nate was handsome but I just didn't see him that way. Maybe it's because we grew up together and I've always seen him as a brother

Later on that day, I received a call from my one and only friend Sasha. "Hello," I answered. "That's dry, but anyways guess what?" She sounded excited. "Um—you're pregnant?" I knew she wasn't but I didn't know what else to say so...

She sucked her teeth, "What the hell? No. You remember that guy I told you I was talking to?" She started. "Mhm." I nodded like she could see me.
