"You look decent, where you going?" I rolled my eyes at my brother's attempt at a compliment. He was already walking in without knocking, now this. "I'm going out," I stated the obvious as I applied lipgloss in the mirror.
He sat in my desk chair, "Obviously, where tho?" He asked spinning in the chair. "I don't know, wherever he takes me," I answered.
He shook his head, "You should start asking these types of questions, just getting in the car with no destination. They could be about to kill you and you're just happy to be goin." He said.
"Get out." I turned away from the mirror. He shrugged and left, "Annoying brat." I mumbled as I gathered my things and threw them in my purse.
Bing!
I looked down at my phone and saw a message from Chase letting me know he was outside.
"Oh, that was a lucky shot," I said as he made a perfect shot into the middle. "Never luck, I got skills baby." He boasted. I put one more fry in my mouth before standing up, "Let me show you how real skill looks." I said.I'd never been to Top Golf, or any other golf at all so the chances of me making it were low. But this was for fun so I was cool with that.
I grabbed the club and mimicked the stance I saw him doing before my turn. I focused on lining the club with the ball, and when I felt it was right I swung...then missed the ball completely.
Chase laughed, "Looks like those skills of yours are a little rusty." He said. "Hold on, don't get too happy. Let me warm up." I said.
And again, I got in position, lined the club up, and swung...completely missing once again.
This golf stuff was a little harder than what I thought it would be. Who knew hitting a ball with a stick would need so much concentration?
Chase walked over to me, "Let me help you." He stepped behind me.
"See the key is very simple..." he talked softly. "You have to bend your knees, aim and swing."
"But position your hands like this." He guided my hands with his. He pulled the club back and swung. There it was, another good shot.
"Want to try it on your own or do you need another one-on-one tutorial." He smiled. "I think another tutorial would do me right," I answered.
"I can do you right..." he whispered in my ear making a chill go down my spine.
I didn't mention I was a virgin yet, the subject never really came up. I mean when would be the right time? I couldn't just throw it out there like a caution, Oh by the way I'm a virgin. Not.
I responded with a giggle.
The date went quite well, I learned a new skill and I enjoyed being around him. He didn't overcompensate with compliments, he was a gentleman and the best part was his looks. I liked looking at him. He was the definition of eye candy, I couldn't get tired of the view.
"You enjoy yourself?" He asked as we got in the car. "Yes, very much actually," I answered.
"Great. I'm new to this, I don't usually do dates." He pulled off.
"What does that mean?" I asked.
"Girls usually throw themselves at me, I usually get the prize on the first night and don't pursue them after that." He shrugged. "So are you only after my 'prize'?" I asked.
"I like you. You didn't jump my bones the first night and you seem genuine. But if the prize comes I won't turn it down." He said.
"Can I be honest?" I asked.
"Always." He said.
"I'm a virgin," I admitted.
"And?" He frowned in confusion.
I was shocked, I was expecting some type of extra response. "I mean, I was expecting you to be surprised or taken aback," I stated.
"I'm a grown man, if I'm pursuing you it's deeper than sex. That will come when it comes." He said.
I couldn't help but smile.
After last night I was geeked, I couldn't stop thinking about Chase. He didn't make me feel childish for being a virgin and that meant a lot to me. "How was your weak-ass date?" My brother sat at the dining table with a big bowl of cereal.
"You're annoying." I stood up to leave. "I'm just playing, chill. Sit back down and stop being childish." He said.
I sat down, "You're the childish one. You can't have a normal conversation or show real emotions without all the extra." I said.
"Igh, ima chill. What y'all do last night?" He asked.
I told him all about the date, of course leaving out a few parts. "How are you and Zarah?" I asked.
He chuckled, "She's old news, I got a new shorty, her name Destiny. She is interesting, I usually crack a girl within a month but not her. I can't figure her out, but I like a challenge." He took a bite of his cereal.
"She might be a virgin," I said.
He threw his neck back, "Hell no, not with a body like that." He said. "What if she is?" I asked.
He chuckled, "Ima have to cut her loose, virgins are clingy once you give 'em some. I don't get time for that." He said simply. I rolled my eyes, "You know how lame you sound? You're only dating a girl to have sex then dump her?" I shook my head.
"I'm young, I'm not tryna settle down yet. I need to explore my options, that's smart, not lame." He said.
"Lame." I stood up and went up to my room. I still had work to do, I finished one and had another one to go.
3 Days later...
The class was just about over and everyone was packing up to leave. "Test on Tuesday, don't be late or I'm docking five points." Our professor stated as people started to leave.
I stood up and started to do the same, "Naomi, a moment please." He stopped me. I fought the urge to sigh. I turned around and made my way to his desk. "Yes sir?"
"Uh, about the project you turned in— it was trash, which is unlike you." He started. "What's going on?" He asked.
I sighed, "I just have a lot going on."
He nodded, "I know you can do better than this, so I want to give you a chance to fix it." He said. I thanked him.
"Have it to me on the 14th, 9:00 AM sharp." He said. "Okay, thank you so much."
Part of me didn't want to redo the paper, but I knew I couldn't fail this class so I was grateful.
