This is a funny story which "explains" why and how you get hiccups.

When we eat, the food is broken down in the stomach where it dies, which releases it's ghost. Now that it's trapped within the stomach, you can often hear the ghost wailing and complaining about its fate. You call these noises, 'tummy rumblings.'
To be able to live, the ghost has to eat. So it eats all the food that you eat, like some chips, lasagna etc.
As the ghost eats, that food dies again, releasing more ghosts who in turn eat food, die, and so on, resulting in a stomach bulging with angry ghosts who just want a change of scenery!
Pretty soon, this loose assortment of ghouls realise they can do a lot more by joining forces. So they elect a leader and form a ghost collective thus becoming a sort of gastric SUPERGHOST!
When this superghost grows big enough, it releases a series of baby ghosts, which appear as hiccups! Finally, the superghost explodes in what we call a 'burp' and then the whole process starts again.
