Always Ace

Questions

Logan bends to a single knee. Through the corner of my eye, I can see that Honor is as giddy as a schoolgirl with an obvious crush. Please say yes is all over her face.

This mind is racing with questions. Is he doing this because of our child? Is he defying his family or my mother? I know my thinking a lot but this is how I process things. I make lists of the pros and cons.

I absent-mindedly, slowly, and softly trace a circle on my growing baby bump with the palm of my hand. I think he knows I would give anything for him. He's the only man that I can see in my daydreams. He's the only man I want to raise my baby with. He's of a different world, one with money. Regardless, I love him more than anyone could imagine.

"Rory?" I can't imagine he'd walk away from the Life and Death Brigade. Yet, I think he knows I'd want him to do what he loves. As long as he isn't risking his life with the boys. "Ace? You're making a pro-con list, aren't you?" He smiles. He knows me so well. "Ace, I've been in love with you since day one. I know you. I won't do anything life-risking with the boys. I'd give up anything for you, anything for our baby."

"You just answered my only question! Yes, yes! I will marry you!" Logan slips an elegant and simple piece of jewelry on my finger. I'm stunned by the delicate features. It's so unadorned, and so my style. I can't stop smiling. Honor runs up and grabs us for a group hug full of laughs.

Logan and I begin to take our adventure home. It's a foggy moonlit night. Dense, eerie, and seems to have come from thin air or something. "Oh, shit. Ace, I can't see."

Even though we're venturing through an unknown, I can see a silhouette. I think it might be ... a person! "Logan, watch out!"

"What? What do you see?!" The haze lifts a bit and I think he can see what I'm referring to. "Shit!" The vehicle swerves. We harshly hit a tree. My fiance is unconscious against the steering wheel. That's the last thing I see.
