It's one o'clock in the morning. A doctor walks towards us. I stir Logan, waking him from his sleep. He was using my shoulder as a pillow.
"She's asking for Logan."
Logan and our family rush to Honor's side. I hate that there's not much I can do other than be here for her and the family. I take her hand as her eyes flutter open. She smiles at me. "Rory, you're here."
"Logan is as well. He's right beside you," I whisper.
"Lo?" Honor turns her head towards him. Everyone can tell it takes effort but she is determined. I can see the emotion in both of their eyes as she reaches out to him. He hugs her and sobs. "Lo."
"I'm here."
Just moments later, the doctor enters. She's wearing coal scrubs underneath her white lab coat. Her hair is silky and black in a high ponytail "Good. You're awake. I'm Doctor Chambers. How are you feeling?"
"My memory is fuzzy. I can't remember why I'm here."
"Do you know where you are?"
"A-a hospital."
"Good. Can you tell me who these individuals are?"
"My parents, little brother, and his fiance."
"Your long-term memory is intact. That's a very good sign." Her hair bounces as she grins.
"What about short-term?"
"Honor," Logan whispers. "Do you remember the baby's name? Do you remember that conversation between us the other night?"
"Lo, wait. That night," she pauses in reflection. "That night, I was walking home. A-and then..." Honor sobs. I rub her hand. It's the only thing I can do to help her right now.
"Shhh, sis. It'll be okay." Logan holds her to his chest gently.
"We'll be back," Logan whispers in his sister's ear. I let go of her hand slowly.
We all walk out of the hospital room. We are trying to respect her privacy. Mitchum pulls Logan aside and passes his son an envelope. Logan unseals it, looks on the inside, and slams it into his father's chest after Mitchum says something. "Screw you! We are done!!"
Logan doesn't say a word as he enters the hospital room. Through the window, I can see him tell his sister that he'll see her later. My fiancee takes my hand and remains silent as we exit the emergency room doors.
"What happened, love?"
"My father tried to pay me to leave you and Lori." The car ride is utter silence afterward. When we get home, Logan puts his palm on my belly without a peep.
"Marry me in the morning."
As soon as it hits 10 am and I'm on my fifth cup of tea, Logan and I are promising each other forever.
4 months later
"Push, Ace!" I scream as he counts. "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10!" it's one o'clock in the morning. I am completely exhausted and have been in labor for four hours. Just as I'm about to give up, we hear wails.
"Oh! There's our girl!"
Logan kisses my head. He follows as the doctor whisks Lori to weigh and wash the fluids off the newborn. I can see him whisper to her and she stops wailing.
