Jaiden stood hidden by the drapes of an upscale cafe, his eyes locked on the figure of Karina who sat at a corner table. Across from her, a man leaned forward, his hand covering hers, a smile playing on his lips. Jaiden's hands balled into fists, the fabric of the curtain crumpling in his grasp as he watched in disbelief.
Flashback to a week before, the two lay on a rooftop, gazing at the stars.
Karina’s voice was soft, "Jaiden, no matter how far our careers take us, it's you and me against the world."
Jaiden turned to look at her, his heart swelling, "I know Kari, it’s always been you.”
Back in the present, Karina’s laughter echoed to where Jaiden stood. He felt a pain sharper than any lyric he'd ever written. Tentatively, he approached the table.
“Karina?” Jaiden's voice broke the private world between her and the man.
Karina’s eyes widened, a flicker of guilt flashing across her face. “Jaiden! This isn't—”
The man stood up, offering a hand, “You must be Jaiden. I've heard a lot about you.”
Jaiden ignored the hand. “Can we talk? Alone?”
Karina nodded uneasily, and they stepped outside.
Under the dim lights of the quiet street, the hush between them was deafening. Jaiden’s voice trembled as he spoke, “Are we not enough for each other anymore, Karina?”
Karina’s face twisted with emotion, “Jaiden, it’s not like that. It’s just…" She trailed off, unable to finish her thought.
“Just what? That he listens? That he’s there?” Jaiden's voice cracked, a marred melody. “I thought love was about distance too, about waiting.”
“I'm sorry, I never meant to hurt you,” her voice was a whisper, the sorrow unmistakable.
Jaiden shook his head, his eyes distant, “Your sorry doesn't change what I saw, Karina. What we had composed... was it all just a practice for the real performance with someone else?”
“Jaiden, please…”
“No,” he cut her off, his resolve a fragile shield against his broken heart. “I loved you. Clearly, that wasn't mutual. I hope he makes you happy in ways I couldn't.”
Karina reached out, but Jaiden stepped back, “Goodbye, Karina.”
He turned away, leaving her standing alone. As Jaiden walked into the night, the echoes of their love—an unfinished duet—faded into the silence, the haunting melody of what could have been slowly dissolving in the space between the stars they once watched together.
