Chapter 18

Two weeks had passed since the library fiasco and Luz was not having the best day. At the moment Luz was outside the owl house covered in mud while holding a bucket of soapy water in her left hand and a sponge in her right, with squeaky clean Hooty in front of her smiling like a mad man. "Ooh, look at me. I'm so clean I'm a mirror," said Hooty as he stretched and turned his neck to look at the reflection on his neck. "Great, that means I can finally clean myself up," Luz said as she walked past Hooty who was hypnotized by his reflection and entered the house heading straight to the bathroom.

After a quick bath, Luz used a blow-dryer to dry most of her fur but couldn't quite reach a spot on her back, she was about to give up and use a towel when she heard a voice behind her. "Need some help with that kid?" asked the voice. Turning her head around Luz saw Eda leaning on the bathroom door frame. At first, Luz just wanted to be left alone because she was still a little mad at Eda, but the weight from the wet fur on her back compelled her to accept the offer.

Handing Eda the dryer the witch quickly went to work drying her daughter's fur. For a few moments, the two of them stayed quiet not saying a single word to one another until Eda decided to say something. "I know you're still mad at me, I would be too if I were you," Eda said moving the dryer back and forth at a steady pace. "But please understand, everyone has topics that they find hard to talk about, and I know you have yours," said Eda as she put her hand on Luz's shoulder. Hearing her mom say that Luz recalled all the times people asked what she and her brother were and how she would get knots in her stomach. She also remembered the lifeless look in Amity's eyes when she talked about her parents.

Luz didn't say anything but Eda could tell that there was something on her daughter's mind. Putting the blow-dryer on the bathroom counter Eda walked in front of Luz and with her hand on Luz's cheek Eda continued. "I'm not saying you should stop asking questions, that curiosity of yours is one of the many things I love about you Luz. All I want is for you to try and think about what the other person might be going through before you ask, ok?" asked Eda hoping that the talk helped with what was on Luz's mind, and Eda got the answer in the form of a hug.

"Ok Mom, I'll try," Luz said rubbing her face into Eda's torso while her mom returned the hug. the two stood there hugging each other for a while until Luz got an idea. "Does this mean I can stop cleaning Hooty?" Luz asked only for her mom to start laughing and pull away from the hug. "Sorry kid, but no," Eda answered with an amused smile, causing Luz to let out a huff, walk out of the bathroom, and head for her and King's room.

Once inside their room, Luz went to her closet to find something to wear. After looking through her closet Luz found a black sweater with the phrase 'Queen of the Hex' on the back. After putting on the sweater Luz walked over to the little bookshelf that Eda got for her on her tenth birthday and grabbed a fantasy book about a snow demon trying to get back to its home in the icy tundra. With the book in hand, Luz went downstairs, to the living room, onto the sofa, and started reading her book.

About halfway through the third chapter, Luz felt the sofa move signaling that someone else had sat beside her. Looking up from her book Luz saw King with a stuffed lion in his arms staring at her with pleading eyes. Knowing what King was asking for, Luz patted the spot right next to her and returned to the book's beginning. Quickly King scooted over right next to Luz and eagerly waited for Luz to start reading the story.

For the next two hours, Luz read the book out loud to King who was listening to the story intensely not wanting to miss a single detail. By the end of the sixth chapter, Luz was getting a little hungry and decided to grab a snack. "I'm a little hungry how about you?" Luz asked King as she closed the book. "King demands cookies!" King yelled excitedly as he jumped off the sofa and headed for the kitchen on all fours. Laughing at King's actions Luz put the book down and followed her brother.
