Three days had passed since the parade incident meaning it was now the weekend and Luz couldn't wait to get to the library, mainly because she wanted to get away from her mom. After their argument, the two hardly spoke to one another and mainly just kept to themselves unless King asked one of them to play with him or read him a story. At first, Luz thought she should tell Eda where she was heading, but decided to leave a message with Hooty that way the house demon would talk the witch's ear off when she asked him.
It was a little after ten when Luz packed a small lunch in a backpack, told Hooty about her plans, and started walking toward the town. While on her way to the library, Luz couldn't help but notice a small group of young witches around her age had gathered on the opposite side of the street. At first glance, it looked like a group of friends who were hanging out, but when Luz saw a pink-skinned girl with three grayish-blue eyes and pink hair held up in a bun pushed another girl with fair skin, short navy-blue hair, and olive green eyes framed in round glasses she knew it wasn't something good.
With a determined look in her eyes, Luz walked toward the small crowd wanting to help but also to blow off some steam. "Don't you have anything better to do," said a young boy with almond brown skin and dark brown hair, as he got between the two girls trying to protect the one with glasses. "What can be better than reminding trash like you where you belong," said the pink girl before she started to draw a spell circle, but before she could finish she felt a hand grab her wrist.
When she turned her head to see who dared to stop her, she saw a dog-like demon with a tight grip on her wrist and its claws digging into her skin a little. "What do you think you're doing?" asked the pink girl as she tried and failed to pull her wrist out of Luz's grip. "I'm stopping a bully," said Luz as she let go causing the girl to stumble back. In less than a second the three remaining girls surrounded the three-eyed girl asking her if she was hurt.
The first girl had almond brown skin, gray eyes, and gray hair with dark brown on the bottom in a high ponytail. The second girl had warm ivory skin, short light green hair, and dark green eyes. The third and final girl had a similar complexion to the first girl with brown wavy hair and squared glasses in front of her brown eyes. After they made sure their friend was all right they glared at Luz who was standing between the four of them and the other two witches with her arms crossed.
"I don't know who you think you are but no one treats me like that and gets away with it," said the pink girl as she got in Luz's face to intimidate the demon. Wanting to end this quickly Luz took a small breath and let out a sonic weh. It was too weak to hurt the girls but strong enough to push all of them to the ground and onto their butts. In less than a second the four witches stood back up and looked at the demon in shock, but the shocked expression on the three-eyed girl quickly turned to anger before she charged at Luz trying to grab her.
Right when the witch was about to grab Luz she sent out another sonic weh except this one was strong enough to push the witch halfway across the street. Seeing their ring leader on the ground the other three witches rushed over to their friend and helped her back up. After getting her back on her feet they quickly ushered her away not wanting to see what else the demon could do. "This isn't over you mutt," yelled the pink girl as her friends pushed her away. 'Like I haven't heard that before,' thought Luz as she rolled her eyes.
"That, was, AWSOME!" yelled the witch boy causing Luz to turn around and see the kid looking at her excitedly. "Who are you? Who did you do that? What type of demon are you? Can you teach-" said the boy as he asked question after question before the girl stopped him. "Easy Gus, we to introduce ourselves first," said the girl as she tried to calm down the boy now known as Gus. "I'm Willow Parks," "Augustus Porter, but you can call me Gus," said the girl and Gus as they both extended their hand toward Luz. "Luz Clawthorne," said Luz as she grabbed and shocked Willow's hand first and then Gus's.
"So If you don't mind me asking, why were three eyes and her minions bothering you?" asked Luz. "Cause they have nothing better to do," said Gus as he folded his arms and looked away with a sour expression. "Boscha and her friends like to remind us that we don't belong anywhere and that we are not even real witches," Willow said as she turned her gaze downwards and clenched her fist. "And I'm just, so sick of it!" yelled Willow as she closed her eyes and stomped her foot on the ground, and to Luz's surprise vines started to grow out of the spot Willow put her foot down.
"You just grew those without casting a spell circle," Luz said as she pointed at the still-growing plants. At first, Willow was confused but when she looked down and saw the plants she started to panic. "I'm sorry it just happens when I get angry," Willow said as the plants returned to the ground. "Why are you apologizing that's amazing," said Luz with so much excitement that it caught the two young witches off guard. "The fact that you can grow those without a spell circle just proves how strong you truly are," Luz said as she excitedly put her hand on Willow's shoulders and shook her a little.
For a while, Willow stood there surprised that someone besides her dads and Gus was complimenting her. "You truly think she's that strong?" asked Gus as he looked at Luz, just as surprised as Willow. "Of course, talent like this isn't something you come across often," Luz said as her excitement continued to grow, but when she saw the sad expression on their faces her joy quickly decreased. "What's wrong?" asked Luz worried that she might have said something that upset them as she removed her hands from Willow's shoulders.
"It's just... we find it hard to believe it's a good thing when all it ever done was hurt people around us," "Or ourselves," Willow explained with Gus adding the last bit, after hearing that Luz understood that they both had strong magic, but not the best experiences when it manifested. "I'm sorry for getting ahead of myself, but you have an amazing talent. All you have to do is work a little harder than others to control it, and ounce you do you'll be able to do amazing things," said Luz starting with an apologetic voice that slowly turned into a more reassuring and encouraging one.
For a while Willow and Gus just stood there taking in what Luz told them. And as they did they remembered everything they'd been through and the goals they hoped to achieve one day. After they thought about it they looked at one another and then back at Luz who was waiting and hoping to hear an answer from the two young witches. Willow was a bit skeptical and worried that Luz may not be as nice as she appeared to be, but Gus thought that it was worth a try if it meant he and Willow could make their dreams come true. "Do you know any tricks that can help us?" asked Gus wanting to get started as soon as possible.
Upon hearing that Luz looked away awkwardly and started to rub the back of her neck. "Will, not personally, but if I have to guest some basic magic control drills could help," Luz thought out loud as she moved her hand from her neck to her chin. "But control drills are some of the first things ever witch learns," Willow said a little bit confused about Luz's suggestion. "True, but that doesn't mean you should stop doing it the moment you learn something new. I mean, you never know when an old lesson might come in handy," explained Luz.
Quickly thinking about what Luz said, Willow and Gus both realized that the demon had a valid point. "We can also check the library to see if they have books on the subject," said Luz as she turned her head in the direction of the library. "Are you sure about that, cause I don't want us to take up any more of your time than we already have," said Willow wanting to be sure that she and Gus weren't an inconvenience for the demon. "It's fine I was going to meet up with a friend there anyways, but if you want to go on your own time I understand," said Luz not wanting to make it feel like she wasn't giving them a choice.
After hearing that Willow and Gus turned away, huddled close to one another, and started to discuss what to do. For about five or so minutes Luz waited for the two witches to finish doing her best not to eavesdrop on their conversation. Once they were done Gus started to walk in the library's direction. "Will, are we going or not?" Gus asked excitedly when he looked at Luz and Willow from over his shoulder.
Surprised Luz turned to look at Willow who smiled at her, gave a reassuring nod, and went to follow her friend. For a moment Luz stood there and watched the two witches walk ahead of her before quickly shaking off her surprise and jugged after them to catch up. As they got closer to the library Luz got more excited to introduce them to her friend Amity, completely unaware of the drama it would incur.
