Three weeks had passed since Luz's and King's heart-to-heart on top of the tower and so far things had been going smoothly in the Clawthorne family. After King reminded Luz that she wasn't alone, she asked her mom if she would help her train to control her powers. At first, Eda was concerned that Luz might be pushing herself too hard, but after some time thinking, Eda realized that this was the only way for Luz to grow without a proper teacher. Of course, King wasn't left out this time either, even though he couldn't participate in most of the training he would still try to do some of the drills when they weren't too hard, and he would help his mom take notes when they were.
For the next three weeks, Luz trained with her powers, learning how to fight with them, use them in getaway plans, and play with them. At first, Luz wasn't having a lot of success in her training. The first few attempts into her glyph training ended in an explosion that either sent the family flying or damaged the house. Luz was at her wit's end until King suggested that she try to picture what she wanted the glyphs to do before activating them. At first Luz and Eda didn't see how this could help, but after talking about it they figured that if the glyphs truly were Luz's form of magic then she should be able to control them to some degree.
The first time Luz took King's advice she learned that she could grow not just vines, but any kind of flowers, trees, and other plant life she could think of. The fire and light glyphs worked differently, but she could now determine the flame's strength and the light's brightness. Now instead of just burning things or setting them on fire, Luz was able to use the fire glyph to cut through metal, and she was also able to create a makeshift flash boom with the light glyph, but of course, she ended up blinding herself the first time she tried it. After the third week had passed and the weekends came around Luz decided to give herself a day off from training.
Today Luz found herself walking through the town's shopping district looking at the stalls to see if they had anything interesting. When Luz stopped at a stand selling jewelry to see if they had something interesting, something hit her in the back. When Luz turned around to see what it was she saw Boscha and her three friends whom Luz known as Skara, Cat, and Amelia, thanks to Willow and Gus, holding what appeared to be rotten fruit. "Hay mutt! Care to help us with target practice!" yelled Boscha as she tossed one of the fruits in her hand. Luz's first instinct was to use her 'Sonic Roar' to send them flying, but she stopped when she remembered a tip her mom had given her.
'Sometimes the best move in a fight is to let our opponent go first,' said the memory that took place after one of Luz's training routines. After taking a quick breath to calm herself down an idea came to mind of how she could get the four witches to 'make the first move'. "If you want a dummy to practice with, look in the mirror," Luz said as she mimicked Eda's hand wave when she brushed something off. That did the trick because not long after saying that Boscha and the others started to throw the fruit at Luz. Acting fast Luz let out a 'Sonic Roar' at the flying fruit which caused them to be sent back to the witches.
One fruit hit Cat on her left shoulder, one got Skara in the stomach, another on Amelia's right arm, and the last got Boscha right in the face. While the witches were dazed and trying to figure out what happened, Luz took it as an opportunity to leave and started to run. After about five seconds Luz heard shouting, yelling, and the phrase 'I gonna kill that mutt' coming from behind. And without a second thought, Luz got on all fours and bolted down the street taking corners, weaving through the crowds, and jumping over little demons, all in an attempt to lose the four anger witches.
When Luz came across an alleyway she ducked into it, hid behind a trash can, and waited. Not long after hiding Boscha and her minions run past Luz still thinking they are on her tail. After they had left Luz slowly emerged from her hiding spot and carefully looked around to ensure her pursuers were gone. Once Luz was certain that the girls were gone she went about her business as if nothing had happened. But when Luz walked past a stand selling mirrors she saw that she still had some rotten fruit slug on the back of her skull from where she was hit.
