Chapter one:awake!

 Lucas sat by Max's bedside, the weight of guilt heavy on his shoulders. He couldn't shake the feeling that it was all his fault. If only he had acted quicker, if only he had been stronger, maybe Max wouldn't be lying here, unconscious and vulnerable.

He looked at her pale face, her chest rising and falling with the steady rhythm of the machines that surrounded her. Her injuries were a stark reminder of the danger they had faced together, the battles they had fought side by side. And now, she was paying the price for his failure to protect her."It's all my fault, Max," Lucas whispered, his voice barely above a hoarse murmur. "I should have grabbed your headphones before Jason came in and stomped on them. I should have been faster, stronger. I should have... I should have protected you.

"Tears welled up in his eyes as he imagined the pain and fear Max must have experienced in that moment of attack. He was her friend, her protector, and he had let her down. He didn't know how he would ever forgive himself.But just as he was lost in a sea of self-blame, a miracle happened. Max's eyes fluttered open, her gaze meeting his in a moment of clarity. "Lucas?" she whispered, her voice fragile and weak.Lucas's heart leaped in his chest as he grasped her hand tightly. "Max? You're awake. Oh my god, you're awake!

"A flicker of recognition crossed Max's face as she struggled to sit up, a smile lighting up her features. "I... I can see. Lucas, I can see!"Joy and relief washed over Lucas as he gathered her in his arms, holding her close as if she might disappear again. Max was alive, awake, and she was looking at him with eyes full of gratitude and love."Max," Lucas breathed, his voice choked with emotion. "I'm so sorry. I thought I had lost you."Max shook her head, a tear slipping down her cheek. "No, Lucas. You saved me.
