Paralyzing Choices

I swallowed nervously.

Other wolves began filling in the clearing beyond the door. I looked back and saw they were the villagers we'd brought with us.

But there were deeper sounds and I saw the moment that the more aggressive NightHunter guards returned.

They too were in wolf form and there was no hesitation in them as they launched at the smaller, untrained males. Ripping at their throats and backs.

I watched the decimation in horror. Shaking my head.

By now Vanquish was charging the NightHunter Alpha.

I suddenly wanted to scream for him to stop and retreat but I knew that Vanquish was too far into his attack.

Trying to pull him out now will be impossible.

I sent out a cry through the woods, calling to anyone or anything that might be out there for help. A long, broken sound filled with all the desperation that Marta's had carried earlier.

I hoped that under the Mating Moon, the sound of a female in distress might lure even more into battle against the NightHunters.

They're far outnumbered in these woods, if the others come.

But the night was rising. The pink moon inched higher into the sky. Making the males more aggressive, the females more submissive and filling me with anxiety.

What have I done?

***

There was snarling and ripping.

Both my mates were struggling to match the one NightHunter who seemed incredibly strong.

Vanquish was tactical and did well circling to attack from opposing sides, but the NightHunter Alpha combatted that by constantly rotating. Making it hard to get ahold of him.

I saw the gaps in Vanquish and Hunter's attack and new another of my mistakes.

They're accustomed to attacking as a trio.

And I left Racer behind.

I yipped worriedly. Shedding my dress and dropping to all fours to take the form of the white wolf. Knowing that turning into the wolf would make my pheromones spill dangerously out into the night but I had no choice.

I hooked the back of Mary's dress and began pulling her toward the door. Wanting to get her out of the path of danger.

"No!" She shrieked brokenly as she launched to her feet. Tears streamed her face as she looked hatefully around the room, as if blaming us all for her pain. She lifted her hands, and her hair began to sway as if under water. The irises of her blue eyes turned to swirling pools. And she was huffing. A foggy haze surrounded her.

In the distance I heard the first slosh of a giant wave of water. And sensed more would come.

She's going to drown all of us.

I growled at her, but it was as if she no longer saw me. I leapt on her, tackling her back to the floor and shaking my furred head at her. Trying to convey my message through the brown fur circling my eyes.

She was staring above us as if she didn't see me and I could still feel the cold chill of an oncoming flood.

She's powerful.

She's not stopping.

I opened my jaws and thought I would have to kill her myself, to stop her from slaughtering us all, but I heard a man in the clearing shout.
