Just then Hunter scampered up to us. "I got his line."
"Which way."
"Headed North."
"Toward the WildWood?" Vanquish asked in surprise.
"He must be thinking if he can make it there, we won't follow him in." Racer suggested.
"We can't." Vanquish agreed. "Not with the wolf-hunting-Roamer there."
"What's that?" I asked.
"A troll. I think." Racer murmured.
"A giant. He hunts anything with fur and ears that seems like it might be a wolf."
"Why?"
"It's said that a vicious mage cursed him to forever be trying to destroy the Moontower Mob."
I gave him a questioning look.
"Really?" Vanquish groaned.
"Memory loss." I tapped my head pointedly.
"There was a castle beyond the WildWood-"
"It's still there." Hunter injected. "I've glimpsed its ramparts now and then."
"Truly?" Even Racer looked surprised.
And he's usually the historian amongst us.
Vanquish's brows shot up. "It was called Moontower."
"There was a prince that had just been crowned. Braxus, I believe was his name." Vanquish elaborated.
"Odd name." Vanquish murmured thoughtfully. "Anyway, it's said that she came to the castle for his affections, and he spurned her. In retaliation she cursed the castle to desolation and cursed the WildWood with the Roamer to make sure that none of them could ever escape the horrible fate within its stone walls."
"That sounds awful."
"It was said he was a fierce Prince. One who would've been important to wolf lineage." Racer remarked.
"Who knows if he's still alive now?" Hunter remarked softly.
"So many old tales haunt these lands." I commented.
"One of my favorites is of the 'Spark'." Racer grinned. "Remind me to tell you about that little beastie sometime. Quite an intriguing tale."
"Ooh." I beamed at him. "I'd love to hear it."
I wondered sometimes how many of these stories I'd once known. I knew the Gallions had, had a finger on the pulse of the lands and I imagined there'd been a time when I was well versed on all the things Racer and Magus seemed to know. I wish I could remember more of them.
Vanquish had averted his attention back to Hunter and the job we were doing. "How fast is he going?"
"Still a wolf. Still fast. Still running."
Vanquish gave him a long look. "Good. Least he's moving so I won't suddenly round a corner and come across him."
"No. But I'll keep a bit ahead to make sure we're clear."
Vanquish nodded.
***
Hunter came back to tell us the next camp had just come into view.
Vanquish nodded. Catching my elbow, he turned me. "Will you stay back a bit this time?"
He gave me a pleading look.
"You should, Vanna Rae." Racer agreed. "You've been through enough as of late."
"You're still exhausted and hurting from last night." Vanquish added.
