Part 26: disappointment

'No, not until this nothing useful fucks off,' Lewis says sourly and tries to hit our father.

My body becomes very small. Lando notices this immediately.

'Bro, come down! This isn't good for any of you. I'll take him out, but stop scaring Amalia...'' Lando says sternly and takes our father out.

'Amalia...' my brother says in an apologetic voice.

Shrugging, I move away.

'I'm sorry...' he says again.

'It's okay... I just need some rest...' I say quietly.

'I'll come with you...' Maria says worriedly and together we walk upstairs to my room.

'Are you really okay?' Maria asks me.

''Yes...I'm going to take a bath now...'' I say, still in shock.

Drying my fingers, I reach for my cell phone, steam rising from the bathtub I'm sitting in next to me.

Lando: ,,please tell me you're okay...''

Me: "Yes, don't worry. I'm just going to take a bath and then I'll go to sleep...''

Lando: ''I wish I could hold you while you fall asleep in my arms...''

Me: ,,a beautiful dream, norris.''

Lando: ,,don't hesitate to come to me if you have another nightmare, even if Lewis might catch us..I'd risk anything for you, dear...''

I woke up in the middle of the night, but contrary to my expectations, Maria was no longer lying next to me. Worried, I escaped from my bed in my pyjamas, ran over to Lando's room and knocked on it.

"Yes?" came his tired voice.

I stepped inside.

Dear? Are you all right?' Lando immediately became worried.

'Yes, everything's fine. Do you know where Maria is? She was lying next to me when I fell asleep,'' I ask him worriedly.

His gaze changes and he sits up, my eyes wandering to his naked torso.

''Um...n-no, maybe she had to go somewhere again...'' he stutters.

I immediately realized his lie.

'At 2 o'clock in the morning? You can bullshit someone else...' I say disappointedly.

Footsteps follow me into the hallway, towards Lewis's room, but his arm grabs mine just as I'm about to open Lewis's door.

'I'm sorry...but I couldn't say anything...' he says sadly.

I averted my eyes in surprise and entered my brother's room. I was met by coldness. He was lying there with Maria naked in his arms.

"Are you kidding me?" I asked sourly.

Innocent eyes open. Lewis covers her body with the comforter.

'Please amalia, I wanted to tell you,' Lewis says, wrapping the comforter around his private parts and walking over to me.

'How long has it been going on?' I ask disappointedly, my eyes building up with tears again.

'A few months,' he says quietly.

'You've all been lying to me for months...' I say in a shaky voice.

'Amalia...' Maria said, ashamed.

'I thought you were my best friend...but you're fucking my brother behind my back...' I say angrily.

'Amalia...it's not her fault...' Lewis intervenes.

'It takes two to have sex, doesn't it?' I say back angrily.

'I'm sorry...' Lewis says regretfully.

'And you tell me something about trust and not lying, but you've been lying to my face for months,' I respond tearfully.

A hand grabs mine behind me. But I push him away from me.

'Breathe, Amalia...' Lando whispers, trying to wipe away a tear.

"What's going on between you?" Lewis asks, shocked.

'Whatever's between us, it's over...' I say to Lando through my tears, staring into his eyes.

"What?" Lewis asks in shock.

'Yes, it was him who almost got me pregnant...' I tell Lewis.

Dismissed by the three of them, I run to my room. With blurred vision, I pack some of my things into a rucksack.

'Please listen to me, dear...' Lando says hurriedly.

'No...it's the last time I trusted you...' I say sourly.

His hands take mine.

'What was I supposed to do? I couldn't betray him,' he asks me.

Tearing his hands away, I reach for my bag.

'You should have told me instead of lying to me again,' I say.

'I'm sorry...I'm sorry...' he says and puts his hands on my cheeks.

Tears were streaming down his face.

'It's over...I'm sure you'll find another distraction...' I say brokenly.

'Please don't leave me...' Lando says through his tears.

Grabbing my bag, I walk over to my bedroom door. Maria and Lewis were standing in the hallway

'I love you, Amalia...and I always have...' Lando said in a broken voice.

My heart stopped. I took a quick breath, wiped away my tears and ran away. Behind me, I could only hear Maria and Lewis shouting. I also heard his crying, which broke my heart. The thing that broke my heart is that I thought Lando and I had a future this time.

"Dad?" I say over the phone as I leave the apartment and cross the dark streets.

"Amalia?" he asked in surprise.

"Is your offer to look after me still on?" I ask.

'Of course sweetie...' he replied happily.

I'll take the next train to Marseille,' I say back.
