Corina's fingers traced the window frame as she peered through the glass, watching the metal sheets blocking the gaping hole in Alexandria's wall.

"Corina, it's your turn." Judith grumbled, tired of the younger girl's tendency to get distracted.

She passed over the small pile of cards when she finally sat back down, the other kids giving subtle yet amused eye rolls as she set down the ace of hearts.

RJ was next, his hand sluggishly reaching out with an exhausted sigh.

His older sister didn't miss this, her lips perking up into a reassuring smile "I'm hungry, too." She shrugged, taking her turn to keep the momentum of the game going.

The silence was agonising, but Hershel's following question made it that much more painful.

"Do you ever worry about your mom when she goes away?" He wondered, his fingers fumbling with the paper in his hand.

"I'm used to it." Judith shrugged.

The answer was yes, Corina always worried.

She had been outside the walls before, she had seen the dead that roamed the earth up close, she had been there to bury the bodies of people she loved most.

In the back of her mind she wondered how long it would be before one of those bodies was her own mother or her father.

She tried to smile at the snide comments from Judith and Hershel, but her heart wasn't in it.

She knew they had the same secret fears as she did, considering both their moms were in the depths of danger as they spoke, but who would it help if they voiced those fears?

"But they always come back, don't they?" Corina mumbled, flipping through the cards in her pile absentmindedly "I mean, what makes this time any different?"

Judith could see the sadness deep in the girl's eyes, the sparkle that once made them a bright green now as dull as the gray sky.

She gave her a gentle nudge, nodding so only she could see. "Take your turn, I'm winning." She flashed a playful grin, making Corina giggle just a little bit.

But that's all Judith wanted, to see a small ounce of hope in the young girl's face, even if she couldn't be sure it was real.
