"Just put all the dress forms in that little room on the left guys, if you will unload that rack I'll roll it in myself. Just pile them in there, it's fine. I'm not concerned with those right now..." I said as I unlocked the roll up door in the back of the shop. We rarely open this door but for things like this I'm glad it's here. "If you see a cat try not to let him out. I'm gonna put him up front when I find him."
"Kiwi!! Keeks! Where's my tiny boy?!" I called up the hallway as I flicked on lights and dumped my bags on the table. I heard a muffled meow coming from the corner. His sweet little face popping up over a stack of fabric bolts in the corner. My sweet boy, oh I missed him, I hadn't had time to see him yesterday, other than a tiny pat on the head when I had came in the door. He jumped down from his perch onto the table and stretched, purring loudly as he walked over to me. I scooped him up, cradling him like a baby in my arms as he buried his face in my neck and I covered his tiny soot black face with kisses.
I had found him the same week that Cathy had first emailed me. Early one morning in the pouring rain as I was opening the shop, he was a wet little shivering speck by the back door that meowed so loudly at me it took me by surprise. He still yells for his meals, but is the most precious and loving little tiny boy. Full grown at a whopping 5lbs he's solid black, except for a tiny tuft of white fur on his belly and his big greenish brown eyes that look like little kiwis. Hence the name. I kept him as a shop cat, seeing though at the time I was spending more time here than at home and he's fit right in from the start and has free rein of the entire place.
"I'm so sorry I ignored you yesterday my sweet boy... I promise you can stay with me today. I missed you Keeks." I held him in my hands as he stretched his arms over his head and arched his little back so far he was almost touching the table in front of me. I laughed and buried my face in his belly.
The sound of the clothing rack banging into the room spooked him and he hopped out of my arms and back on the top of the stacks of fabric in the corner watching over the workroom like he owned it. I heard Edie chatting with her staff in the back before I heard the rolling door shut and she hummed happily down the hall.
"Well someone is in a good mood this... afternoon." I said giving Edie a look and shaking my head.
"You would be too if you let someone spread you out like Ben did me last night." She said, flipping her hair over her shoulder and sighing as she tossed her bag down and started grabbing garment bags and placing them on the table.
"Dear god Eds, you need a fucking filter. I never ever want to hear about anyone spreading anything of yours out ever again. Let alone Ben." I groaned at her, a shiver running down my spine. "Is this a thing? What is going on with you two? How long?"
"I don't know if it's a thing yet, but it's a thing right now. You know when you guys were off the last time? When I went to dinner with you that night? I just wound up sitting beside him, and we exchanged numbers. We have been texting and FaceTiming since then. We haven't seen each other since that night.." she trailed off and looked at me mindlessly playing with a measuring tape she had picked up.
"Oh! So that was the first time?! Lived up to expectations it seems. I can't think about Ben like that. I mean there's nothing wrong with him, but it's just... Ben." I did a once over of the jacket in front of me. Thankfully seeing nothing, I hope all the work I did last night makes today go by a lot faster.
"Exceeded expectations, by a long shot.." she said holding the tape as she spread her hands apart. She giggled and looked up at me with a smirk.
"Edie!!! Oh fuck no. I do not want details. Nope. That is already too much. I'm super happy you obviously had an amazing night but please spare me." I said. "Just be careful, I know Ben and even Austin said he plays a lot."
