Anna-Joy's POV

I trudged along the familiar path home, her backpack heavy with textbooks and her mind still swirling from the whirlwind of emotions that came with the first day of ninth grade. The sun was beginning its descent, casting long shadows across the sidewalk as she walked.

I replayed the day's events in my mind—the nervous excitement of seeing old friends, the anxiety of finding my classes, and the relief of realizing that high school wasn't as daunting as I had imagined. Lost in my thoughts, I rounded the corner onto my street.Suddenly, my heart skipped a beat as I saw him—a figure from my past, standing just a few feet away. It was Ethan, my ex-boyfriend. They had dated for most of middle school before things ended abruptly last year. My steps faltered as a rush of memories flooded back—the laughter we shared, the secrets we whispered, and the tears they shed. I hadn't seen or spoken to Ethan since our breakup, and now, here he was, unexpectedly crossing my path.Ethan's gaze met mine, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still. His expression mirrored mine—a mixture of surprise, hesitation, and something I couldn't quite decipher."Anna-Joy," he said, breaking the silence between them."Ethan," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. They stood there awkwardly for a moment, unsure of what to say or do next. The weight of their shared history hung heavy in the air, mingling with the cool breeze of the evening."I, uh, didn't expect to see you," Ethan finally said, breaking the silence once more."Yeah, me neither," I replied, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. There was a pause as they both searched for something to say, their eyes darting nervously around the street."How was your summer?" Ethan asked, breaking the silence once more."It was... fine," Anna-Joy replied, struggling to find the right words. "Yours?""Good, yeah, it was good," Ethan said, his gaze dropping to the ground.Another awkward silence settled between them, stretching out into infinity. Anna-Joy's mind raced, trying to make sense of this unexpected encounter. Did seeing Ethan again stir up old feelings? Or was it simply the shock of running into someone she hadn't seen in so long?As they stood there, unsure of what to say or do next, Anna-Joy felt a strange sense of closure wash over her. Maybe running into Ethan was exactly what she needed to finally put their past behind her and move forward with her life."Well, I should probably get going," Anna-Joy said, breaking the silence once more. "It was... nice seeing you, Ethan.""Yeah, you too," Ethan replied, his voice barely above a whisper. With one last lingering glance, Anna-Joy turned and continued on her way home, leaving Ethan standing on the sidewalk behind her. As she walked, she couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over her. The encounter had been unexpected, yes, but maybe it was exactly what she needed to finally let go of the past and embrace whatever the future held in store.

As she entered her house, she felt a rush of tears flowing down her cheeks, she wondered to herself why would she ever cry for some bustard who cheated on her.

"Spero di non vederlo mai più", she said to herself. (Translation: I hope to never see him again).
