Chapter four.
Their path had led them to the foot of the walls, down deep into the depth of the mountains were a dark, still lake sat. Gandalf smooths a hand over the wall as Ariadne sits beside Frodo, taking her cloak from around her shoulders, placing it over his lap.
"Are you alright?" Ariadne softy asks as the Hobbit wrapped the cloak tighter around his lap.
"It's cold," Frodo murmured with a small quick smile.
"I suppose your not used to such horrid weather," Ariadne replies, twisting the silver ring that sat on her middle finger, "Ambernshire is a little warmer than the Shire-"
"You've been to the Shire?" Frodo asks, looking up at the young woman.
"Once, in passing, my father and I took our horses out for the day, an adventure," Frodo watches as she smiles slightly, fingertips running over the sapphire gem that sat between two small pearls, "It's a beautiful place."
"Hopefully one day we will return," Frodo says, hands wrapping around the ring that sat on his chest.
"You will," Ariadne reassures him with a soft smile, "I promise."
The two look up as the moon peaks through the clouds, illuminating the shape of the door carved into the rocks that glimmer with a silver light. Ariadne bites back a laugh as Gimli shuffles on his feet as Gandalf looks down at the Dwarf who had forgotten the password to the door.
As Gandalf shouts passwords at the door, as Ariadne moves to help Aragorn take off the bags on Bill the pony. She shrugs her bag over her shoulder, she offers Sam a kind smile as Aragorn slips off the pony's bridle off, "The mines are no place for a pony, even one so brave as Bill, he belongs on wide pasture with sweet grass, not trapped underground in the dark."
"Bye, bye, Bill," Sam sadly whispers, stroking the pony's mane.
"Go on," Aragorn gently pushes the creature away, the three watching the pony walk away along the lake shore.
"Don't worry Sam," Ariadne says, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder, "He will find his way home."
Sam nods, looking up at her with a small smile before moving to sit beside Frodo. Gandalf huffs, sitting down as he looks up at door. Legolas stands beside Ariadne and Aragorn, watching as Merry and Pippin cast stones across the water. Legolas smiled gently, taking a bag from Ariadne's shoulder as the three were left to carry the pony's burden.
"Do you feel it?" Ariadne whispers, her eyes meeting Legolas's, "There is something about this place that is-"
"Uneasy," Legolas finishes, nodding gently as Aragorn hums in agreement, "Be on your guard, Ariadne."
"Not to worry," Ariadne smiles at him before her eyes wonder of the Hobbits who paddle in the water, throwing stones into the dark lake, "Though I don't think they are."
