--Evelyn's POV--
I walk into the apartment and see Kyla glued to the screen and I forgot it was race down. I glance at the screen and am shocked to see Lando is P18. He hasn't been past P6 all season, "You were his good luck charm," she says as I roll my eyes and go to the kitchen, "I know he's been an asshole but something is going on. He practically kissed the ground you walked on," she tells me."Now you're defending him too. Both you and Oscar keep telling me to give him a chance. I don't get it he implied I was a slut and was going around town sucking Max off during the two weeks we didn't talk," I rant as she sighs as I walk into my bedroom to change.
She leans on the door frame with a thought-provoking look in her eyes, "Which is fucked up. I agree he's got some explaining to do. BUT....you were so happy with him," she says as she smacks her hand on the frame and walks away. I stare at the mirror and see the picture Lando and I took at the theater in town.
I pick it up and can't help the smile growing on my face as I see the last one. We couldn't think of a pose so he kissed me but that was when we were still in our 'friends' phase. After changing and going into the living room I lay down on the couch shutting my eyes.
I don't know what time it was before Kyla shook my shoulder, "Hey we are going to meet the guys for dinner," she says. I furrow my brows and slowly sit up completely confused.
"What?"
"Charles invited us to dinner. Lando will be on the other side of the restaurant," she tells me as I rub my eyes. She laughs at the way I look and helps me stand on my feet, "Oscar needs his friend," she says making me glare at her for guilting me into going. I nod my head and tell her I'll get ready as she smiles. It looks like a casual place from the looks of her cutesy summer dress.
I stare at my closet and grab the only dress that's clean. I have been procrastinating on laundry and I don't even want to think about it. It's truly the worst part of the day. The washing and drying is fine but putting away is torture. Modern-day waterboarding. Kyla walks in after I finish changing and helps me pick our jewelry, "You've gotten so tan," she comments making me smile, "Isn't this the dress you got with Lando?" She asks with a growing smirk.
I look down and she's right. I go to change but she tells me we have no time and says the Uber is here, "It will show him what he's missing," she says as I slide my sandals on. I don't want to show him what he's missing.
Oscar gives me a quick hug as we walk over and smiles at Kyla as she sits beside Charles across the table. I see Lando walking in and I quickly turn not being able to look at him, "Congrats on P4," I tell him as he smiles putting his arm on the back of my chair.
"Not as good as P1," Max chimes in making the other guys mock him, "I'm kidding. Kind of but today was a tough race," he says looking tired.
"Why are you guys back in Monaco so quickly?" I ask as some wine is being poured into everyone's glass. I smile as Oscar tells them I prefer white wine stopping the women from putting red in my cup, "How did you know that?" I ask with a small smile.
"Cause Lando kept repeating it before your date with him so he didn't mess it up," he says making the smile falter for a second. I look past his head and see the Brit glaring at this end of the table. Halfway through dinner, I excuse myself to go to the bathroom. I check my phone for a couple of minutes before walking back out and seeing Lando waiting.
"It's nice to see you, sorry about your race today," I smile trying to keep it simple but he stops me from walking away
His lips are close to my ear making my heart skip a beat, "I need my good luck charm," he whispers. His lips brush against my cheek as I stand like a deer in headlights.
I can't lie and say I haven't missed talking to him, even if it was just as friends, "I'm here for Oscar, I should get back," I tell him as he takes his hand off my waist. He's trying to think of something that will make me stay but I don't think anything could.
"Friends," he blurts out as I stop and turn to him confused, "We are friends...right? Our next race is in Britain but the next one is in Austria. I need you there," he says as I fiddle with my phone case, "McLaren needs you there," he says.
"I'll think about it," I tell him knowing I'll definitely be going just because of the way he smiles after I say it. When I walk back to the table I see Charles and Kyla looking at me with a smile and then I realize I was just parent trapped, "You guys are impossible," I say shaking my head. Carlos looks confused as Oscar gives him the same look. I kind of love everyone at this table. They are all so different but they work. Everyone is like a family and Max is the middle child. I ended up playing tic-tac-toe with him on his phone when everyone started talking about the race.
"You cheated," he says as I look at him like he's dumb, "I don't know how but you did," he states after I beat him for the fourth time in a row.
"You just use all your brain cells for racing, mate," Oscar teases making the older man raise an eyebrow at him before laughing, "We were thinking of going out after this, you want to come?" Oscar asks making me turn from Max.
"I would love to but I have work in the morning. If anyone needs a ride home just text me," I tell him as he smiles. He asks Kyla and she says sure as Charles squeezes her side. They are so adorable. I can't help but think about how Lando used to do that. I subtly look down at the end of the table and see him drinking whiskey and talking to Daniel and Alex. All three of them laughing at something he said.
"She is so down bad," Max says as I turn back and see them all watching me watch him. I smack Max's shoulder making the group laugh as he cowers away.
