Even as a reserve course student with no talent, Hajime continued to feel inadequate. He was so resentful of his own limitations that it drove him to want to enroll in the main course. He was dissatisfied with the reserve school's unaspirational attitude and frequently spent his time alone, his only friend being Chiaki Nanami from the Main Course.
His goal ultimately came to fruition when he joined the Izuru Kamukura Project, underwent multiple operations to improve his capabilities, and emerged as the Ultimate Hope. Hajime was not prepared for the inhumane tests that followed, nor for the erasure of his memories of his life before that. But his heart was changed by the Phantom Thieves, and these alterations were undone.
