January 3rd, 2024 📍Serenity's Job
"Nurse Serenity we need you in here!" Dr. Nash could be heard shouting from down the hall.
Quickly serenity got to the room only to see Jay crying and screaming uncontrollably.
"What happened?" She asked the adults in the room as she rubbed in her hand sanitizer.
"We aren't sure. He just started like this after his meds finished."
"Okay. If you don't mind I'm gonna ask you all to step out and give us some space." She politely asked before climbing into the bed with Jay.
She sat at the edge until she felt he was ready for her to slowly come closer.
"Hi Jay. You want to tell me what's bothering you?"
"I miss my mom and you."
"Well mommy has to work buddy. But, I'm here."
"Why wasn't you here yesterday? I was all alone." He crossed his arms over his chest with a very clear attitude.
"I had the day off Jay. Sometimes I get those and I use them because I need a break."
"From me?"
"Never! Just from work baby."
"Okay." He pouted a little.
"How bout this? Let's go for a walk, we can get bubbles and chalk too."
"Yay!" He jumped up before becoming a little lightheaded.
"You ready?"
"Yup!" He held his thumbs up before grabbing her hand and following her out the room.
The remainder of her shift was spent playing with Jay and a few of the other kids who wanted to join them.
It was now going on 4:30 and she had just left the grocery store with all the ingredients to cook chicken tacos tonight per Kani's request.
"Hi baby." She spoke answering Sekanis call as she drove.
"Wassup Phats. What you doin?"
"I just left the grocery store. Where you at boo?"
"The shop. We just putting that last seat and mirror together."
"Oh okay. You okay?"
"Yeah baby. I was just checking on you. I'a see you at the crib. I love you girl."
"I love you baddd." She dragged before kissing the phone and hanging up.
"This boy makes me too damn soft." She rolled her eyes and she grabbed her groceries and headed upstairs.
Finally nearing her door, Jayden quickly swung his door open to speak to her.
"That nigga home now huh?"
"Does that concern you?" She questioned while she searched her purse for her key.
"It does when all I hear is y'all having sex."
"Whatever Jayden." She scoffed before opening her door and locking it as she entered.
She was quickly growing tired of him acting like a girl and being so weird. He knew before they began messing around that she would never take him serious.
Deciding to let it go she changed her clothes and washed her hands before she began playing music and cooking.
30 minutes later
Serenity had just finished setting the table for her and Sekani when he walked in.
"Hi baby." She kissed his face before grabbing their drinks
"Wassup mama, thank you for dinner. Shit look good."
"Your welcome baby."
He headed up to their room to change and wash up before joining her at the table.
"How was your day Phats?"
"It was okay, yours?"
"Why just okay?"
"I'm just a little tired after work, I was on my feet majority of the day and some of the kids were having a harder time than usual. "
"You off tomorrow though right?"
"Yeah."
"Good. Remember what I told you, you gotta take breaks mama."
"I know boo." She sighed before finishing her last taco and washing the dishes.
"I was going to wash them baby. Sit down."
"It's okay K. I don't mind."
"Regardless you been on your feet all day so go sit down. I got it Phats."
"Okay. Sit with me on the couch when you done?"
"Whatever you want."
Serenity sat on the couch before putting on SpongeBob, their favorite cartoon growing up.
Before she could even realize Sekani had sat on the other side of her and quickly pulled her foot up and began to give her a foot massage.
"Thank you baby."
"Anything for you Phats." He spoke his eyes never leaving hers. She could feel herself melt into the couch as she stared at him.
Her mind slowly began to drift back to the days he was gone and the pain she felt.
Flashback:
A 18 year old Serenity laid in her bed crying while watching SpongeBob in her childhood bedroom.
Sekani had just pled guilty and her entire world felt like it would change forever.
"Renny. It's mom, can I come in?"
Instead of verbally replying she only wiped up her face before going to open her bedroom door.
"Oh honey. Are you okay?"
"I'm okay mom." She smiled weakly.
"No you aren't and that's okay. Come talk to me about this baby."
Serenity and her mother climbed into her bed and she immediately began to sob while pouring her heart out to her mother.
"I just want him home mommy. We are supposed to be getting our lives ready."
"I know baby. He'll be home, I promise."
"I just want him home." She repeated until she eventually fell asleep.
End of flashback.
At this point Serenity didn't even realize she was full on sobbing until Sekani leaned over and wiped her tears.
"What's wrong mama?"
"I just was thinking on how I used to feel when you first got sentenced."
"I'm here now though." He reassured her with a kiss to the head.
"I know but it was just so hard to be away from you for three whole years. You were my best friend and you were taken away so quickly." She began to cry harder.
"I'm sorry baby. I wish things was different but I promise I'll never leave you again."
"You promise me Kani?"
"I promise Ren."
