Islan Pov
~~~~~~~~It's been two months since I've seen him. We talk on the phone, FaceTime and text but that's it. He's either busy with school or working at one of the car dealerships with his dad. I just stopped asking when I would see him. I wasn't even the clingy type, wasn't sure why shit changed with him.
He let me keep the spare car and for that I was grateful. Now, that I'm able to pick up more shifts, I can actually save money. I asked Zana to go looking at apartments with me. I tried fairly decent neighborhoods first, but they took one look at me and I know they judged me.
"Maybe, start in the hood first and move your way up."
"I just want a nice spot for my brothers and sisters. They say yo environment have lot of influence on your everyday life."
"Yeah, but you only make so much. Also, you a nigga, with no credit and a criminal record, and a minimum wage job."
"I fuck with keepin shit real but damn." I look at Zana.
"Sorry fam. It's just honesty and these white folks ain't just lettin anybody live in the establishments. Start off in a low income neighborhood and work your way up."
"Yeah. I be wantin everything to just happen on demand but life ain't a movie."
"It's not. You at least met someone like Tre."
"Tre been ghost for a minute. He probably done with my po ass." I laugh but inside I'm hurt.
"Maybe, bro just busy." Zana says.
"Or he just realized I don't add nothing to his already good life. It's all good. I knew it was just going too good. Nigga, like me don't have good fortune like that." We pull up at my job.
"You still gonna make sure I get a free meal?" Zana gets out the car.
"Girl yo fat ass gon eat." I laugh.
Once inside I go to see my schedule for the upcoming week. "Islan."
"Nope, um just checkin my schedule. I ain't clockin in."
"No, that's okay. Look, some guys came up here looking for you. I think the boys you used to chill with."
I stop walking and look at him. "One had tattoos all over his neck?"
"Yeah. Said they ain't saw you in a while and wanted to check in."
"I ain't cool with them niggas no more." I look over the paper. Why they doing this now.
"I didn't think you was. I told them you haven't really been on the schedule and I wasn't sure when I'd see you again."
"Good lookin out." It would only hold them off for so long.
"This crew is like my family and I will look out when I can but Islan, they lookin for trouble." He seems worried.
I am too.
"Don't trip Miles. I won't let shit go down on my watch." I just told him anything to put his mind at rest.
"Good. I will, I'll see you tomorrow." He walks off relieved.
