Seje pulled the reins on his horse slightly, pulling up beside Carter and Nia. "Nia, Carter.." They turned towards him. Carter gestured her hand, "Seje, thank god we were just talking about what happens in the event of an emergency." Seje listened to her talk. "In the event of the front scout squads being wiped out, several of the trainees from the North Division will be wiped out. Since most are right in that area." She paused to catch her breathe. "Now we are in the back right so we will have a little bit of defense. But, who knows how long that'll last." The large group of soldiers was approaching the gate, getting ready for the expedition. "Nia, you're with Mina. Seje, you're with Reiner. If anything happens you two come back to me okay?" Nia and Seje nodded and continued riding forward.
Seje went over the plan in his head. Once the Scouting Legion was outside of the Karanese gate, they would head out of the city surrounding the Wall. In that time, the initial titan defense squad would keep titans off of them before mounting their horses and joining the supply squads. No one was to stop for anything.
After they exited the outer city, they would break up into Squads. Then, they would break off into teams. Then, they would break off into the normal mini-squads that made up the actual formation.
Red for titan. Black for abnormal. Purple for emergencies. Blue for retreat. Green for change of direction. Yellow for titans penetrating the formation. Hopefully he could remember all of that.
The large group of Scouts stopped at the gate. The commander gave a small speech. It did well to fire everyone up. Everyone raised their swords in the air as they got ready to depart for the land beyond the walls. It was silence until suddenly. Commander Erwin had yelled for the Scouts to advance! Seje rode his horse quickly, behind the others, and out of the wall. The first thing he saw was a blinding flash of light, and then a desolated city that stretched for several yards.
The Legion traveled through the city, aiming to get to the vast plains beyond. Seje took note of his surroundings. There were buildings all around, with several holes in them. They were quite short only about 8m tall or less. There was rubble scattered in several places, likely from titans falling on the houses. Dark, green, curly vines and moss were etched into the houses' structures causing deep shadows over the Legion.
Seje snapped out of his trance and looked around. There were titans coming toward everyone. A voice in front of him yelled, something about a 10 meter tall titan. He passed a street and there it was, a titan of about 10 meters. Only about 20 feet away from the formation. Luckily, it was moving slowly. As he passed it, he saw 2 men jump around it with their maneuvering gear. They sliced open it's nape, without a single scratch. He looked around at the other people with him, all of them looked completely terrified. Except for Carter and Vlas, they must be used to this.
Carter enlisted in the military before Wall Maria fell. Seje's family used to live right outside of the Karanese District. In the very town they passed through now. Seje was best friends with Nia when they were young. But then they moved to Gabashin and he met Lauri and Kayla. Four months before Wall Maria fell, the Scouting Legion was stationed at Gabashin for an expedition to survey the land to the East. He saw Carter there, she talked with his mother awhile before leaving. Then, she was only a normal soldier.
Seje snapped out of his memories and looked ahead of him. The street was coming to an end, and the plains were starting. The Legion burst out into the open land and began to get into formation. Seje looked over his shoulder and past his cloak. He saw Lauri. She was riding off with her Squad, nearby Marco, Sasha, Mikasa, and Connie. He turned back around and felt the wind on his face. He rode his horse to the right and over by Carter. Reiner, a guy with short blond hair, and a well built body rode up beside him.
"I hope you haven't forgotten that we're in the formation at the same place," he said.
"Of course not, Reiner," Seje replied, "Though I was kinda hoping you would end up being part of one of the other Squads."
"What? Why!?" Reiner demanded.
"Then, I wouldn't have to put up with your ass jokes the entire time I'm out here."
"Oh c'mon better than being eaten by titans."
"I could argue that..."
"Anyway, do you remember where we are?" Reiner inquired.
"We're at the back right of the formation, a communication and defense Squad. Right behind Armin and Squad Leader Ness. We're next to Krista, and in front of Nia and Mina."
"Right, thanks, kinda forgot."
"I'm starting to think you're more of an idiot than Victor..."
10 minutes later and the formation was in place. Reiner and Seje couldn't see anyone nearby. The situation had gone smoothly so far, no titans. But then, Seje saw a red flare. "Seje," Reiner said, "You get this one." Seje nodded and opened up the left pouch on his horse's saddle. He looked around for a minuted before seeing the red marking on a small metal object. He pulled it out of the pouch and closed it.
He closed the pouch, and pulled his flare gun out from another pocket. He loaded the cartridge in and extended his arm upwards, ready to fire. He pulled the trigger and with a bang red smoke shot up into the air, curving as the cartridge began to fall. He put his flare gun back down in it's pocket.
Minutes later, green signals began firing, tilted to the left, throughout the formation, Seje passed the green signal, and direction, on to the other members of the Legion. It was a few seconds before Seje saw a titan to his left, and another right behind it. They passed them though and the formation began moving left to avoid them. Not much later, a yellow flare was fired from the left wing of the formation, almost to far to see.
"Hey, Seje?" Reiner asked.
"Yes?"
"Wasn't Lauri near that part of the formation?"
"Yes..."
Seje kept looking at that side of the formation, and in 2 minutes it happened again. A yellow flare. It was farther back this time, right across from them. Seje guessed that whatever titan had attacked the first squad that fired it was now attacking the second one. Seje turned his head and continued looking forward. I'm sure Lauri is fine, Seje thought.
Everything had been, for the most part, fine until the moment they started showing up. Black flares all across the front of the formation. Seje and Reiner took turns passing them on, but they were getting dangerously close to the back of the formation, where they were. Seje wondered when they were going to encounter the titans ahead, as the black flares slowed down.
He kept focus on the green plains and trees in front of him, wanting to take it all in before he died. As he rode over the hill, he saw them. Titans. A few of them had fresh blood on their mouths. Seje quickly reached into his pouch and shot a yellow flare. It was passed down the row to his left, toward the center. Reiner and Seje were approaching the titans now. There were four of them. Too many to fight on flat ground.
"Reiner," Seje said.
"No Seje, we're not dying," he retorted.
"I wasn't gon-"
"I have a very fast horse, I'll go and alert anyone who hasn't found out yet. Starting with Armin."
"You crazy!? You'll get killed."
"No, I wont.."
"Reiner, please."
"No, Seje, go and alert Nia and Mina. Tell them to pass it on."
Reiner rode off, leaving Seje in the dust. Seje stopped his horse and turned it backwards. He began to ride to where Nia and Mina were positioned.
