Double Life

Pearl & Scott

PLATONIC

Pearl sat in her tower, watching as Grian and Scar raced away from the red names towards her tower. She smiled, knowing that her brother (Grian) was coming to her for help and protection. She shivered and buried herself deeping into a pile of snow, and she felt Scott throwing on another layer to combat the cold. She giggled and peered over her tower ledge and waited for them to arrive, whether they were here for her or for help she desperately needed the company. Sure enough, after a few minutes, she heard Grian and Scar behind her, arguing about something or other.

“We can't trust her!” Scar said, and Pearl realized that they were talking about her.

“Why not?” Grian asked, and she knew that he trusted her the same way she trusted him.

“She's basically an honorary red name, and since we're the only greens she could hand us in to gain the reds favor.” Scar explained, and Pearl could tell Grian was thinking.

She didn't know how she knew, but she assumed it was a twin thing.

“I trust Pearl.” Grian said, and she could tell that Scar was going to cave, Grian was very persuasive.

“Fine.” Scar said, and Pearl smiled, knowing they still didn't see her. “But if she sells us to the reds-”

“You'll say I told you so.” Grian said, and Pearl laughed, alerting them to her presence.

“Oh hey Pearl!” Grian said, looking for her around the tower while Scar just stood there uncomfortably. “Where are you?”

“I'm right here!” Pearl said, waving from where she sat.

Grian smiled and walked up to her, and when he noticed she was sitting in a pile of snow, he laughed and offered her his hand. Pearl happily took and let him haul her to her feet, and when she was standing, she was a good foot taller than her brother.

“Are you okay?” Grian asked, and Pearl grimaced, and he immediately knew what she was getting at. “Oh Pearl.”

Pearl shrugged, and he nodded, patting her on the shoulder. Pearl offered him a watery smile, and he nodded again, understanding exactly what she was getting at. Grian pulled her into a hug, and she ducked her head, letting it rest on his chest as he rubbed reassuring circles into her back. Scar was staring at them like they were crazy, but none of that mattered to Pearl. Grian cared, and that thought alone was enough to give her new strength.

“You good?” Grian asked as Pearl pulled back, wiping away her tears.

“Yes.” She said, showing off her first genuine smile all day.

The two stood there staring at each other for a few moments with soft looks. Their eyes displayed all their love for the other before Pearl clapped her hands, breaking the moment.

“Well I assume you two want protection and somewhere to hide?” She asked, and Grian nodded, taking Scar's hand. “Well I can help you with that.”

Grian smiled in thanks, and she turned around to look out her window at the rapidly setting sun.

“You two can rest here for the night if you want.” Pearl said as Tilly curled up to sleep.

Pearl left them to it and stood by the window, watching as the world went by without her. She looked back at Grian, and the blond nodded in appreciation before helping Scar settle down in a makeshift bed. Her brother soon walked up behind her and laid his head down on her shoulder with a small sigh.
