Wild Life

The Family

Gem stood with her arms crossed, the speed of the world slightly throwing her off. It was only the second series of life the Watchers had thrown her in, and she was still new to all the crazy things that were happening around her. After the wildcard had rolled, the speed had been so slow that she hadn’t even been able to move, but now it was speeding up, to the point where she was finding it hard to walk properly.

Gem was right now farming wheat, and as she watched people speed around across the river from her, she sighed, knowing they were only going to get faster. The sun moved across the sky at an abnormally fast rate, and she knew it would be nighttime within the hour. She stood up and stretched, looking over to her bridge towards the cherry mountain and saw Etho and Tango talking quickly to each other, a worrying sign, since Tango was a red name, desperate to kill a dark green to gain back a life. Etho then turned and began to walk towards Gem’s base, as Bdubs then went to talk to Tango.

“Joel?” Gem called, looking around for her teammate.

“Yeah?”

She walked around the barn to see Joel sitting on their wall, right by the exit towards Etho’s.

“That’s weird, right?” She asked as Etho drew closer.

“Tango’s probably trying to get a kill on a dark green before we’re all light greens.” Joel guessed, watching as Etho crossed the last bit of bridge.

“Oh they’ve made a mistake trying to get us.” She chuckled and turned to Etho. “Hello Etho.”

“Gem, Bdubs is being mean to me.” Etho said with a frown.

“What do you want me to do about it?” Gem asked, and Joel laughed.

“Tell him not to!” Etho cried.

“Alright, I’ll go and talk to Bdubs.” Joel said with a smile, playing along with what was very obviously a trap.

The three walked across the bridge, and Etho stopped a few paces away from the end because Bdubs was standing on the grassy hill on the other side.

“Bdubs-” Joel started, but he was interrupted.

“You shall not pass!” Bdubs yelled, and as soon as he did, the ground below him exploded, and he was dropped about four meters into a pit of redstone bits and a remaining stick of explosives.

Gem burst out laughing as Joel just stared in shock at the terrible failed trap that just almost killed Bdubs.

“Tango!” Gem yelled through her laughter, wiping away her tears. “Oh my gosh, Tango!”

The man of the hour walked out from behind Etho’s tower and winced at the sight of Bdubs hauling himself out of the hole, and Joel and Gem standing there unscathed beside Etho.

“The redstone geniuses of Hermitcraft, ladies and gentlemen.” Joel laughed.

At this, Tango let out a laugh as Bdubs finally got out of the hole, red in the face and furious.

“Tango! You were supposed to wait until the second ‘you shall not pass’!” Bdubs yelled angrily.

“I thought it was the first one!” Tango yelled back, his pitchy voice rising higher than Bdubs’.

The two began arguing loudly, and as they did, their words became less decipherable as they went on.

“Gosh.” Joel rolled his eyes. “If you two were any more dramatic…”

“Next time you try to kill me, dig out the ground from underneath me or something.” Gem sighed. “Try for a little bit of creativity.”

“I tried to tell them…” Etho said, shaking his head in disappointment as he watched the other two fight.

“This was your idea, Etho!” Tango turned and yelled at him while holding Bdubs back by the head as the shorter tried to smack him.

“Was it?” Etho asked as Bdubs smacked Tango in the arms as the blond let down his guard for a moment.

“I give up.” Gem said with a smile. “Try and kill us by yourselves then!”

She turned to walk away with Joel, and the second her foot touched the bridge, there was an outcry from behind her, as Tango, Etho, and Bdubs all yelled for her help.

She looked at Joel and smiled as he shrugged, nodding back towards them.

“You know Impulse’s still a dark green.” Joel said, and Gem smiled.

She turned around and ran up to Etho and the others, the fast speed carrying her there quickly.

“So this is how we’re gonna get Impulse…”  She started, and Joel smiled, walking off down the bridge.

“Don’t get into too much trouble!” Joel called, and as the explosion and screaming rang out behind him, he sighed, as it was just another day in paradise.

Watch out for the reds everybody! Well, maybe not those reds.
