A/N: this is not written in YNS POV!
Kuina walked into the room, footsteps falling quieter as she saw YN asleep against Chishiyas's chest. "Did you tell her?"
"I did." He continues running his hand through YNs hair, the motion becoming just as soothing to him as it had her. "She didn't take it well."
"She loves you." Kuina points out. "She's in love with you."
"I know."
"Do you love her?"
Chishiya looks at YNs sleeping frame, his eyes softening as he watches her pout in her sleep. "More than I ever thought possible."
"Then you have to let her go. I know you understand why. We are all far too fucked up and if you're here she's going to cling to you and ignore everything else."
Chishiya tried to keep his voice down. "I know but as much as you want me gone I can't leave her right now Kuina, there's too much for her to go through. She won't ever be able to get through police questioning and a possible trial without me."
"It's those things she needs to go through without you in order for her to ever have a fair chance at being okay with what has happened to her. She won't face it if she has you to hide behind." Regardless of their friendship, of her distaste for Chishiya she knew he cared about YN, it was abundantly clear to everyone but the oblivious girl herself.
"So what do I do?" He asks. "Just up and leave?"
"Write her a letter, explain everything. Ask for an exchange to another hospital, I'll keep her occupied whilst you leave. Let her heal, let her learn to live again and then if it's meant to be, find her. You hurt her just as much as anything else in the borderlands did, give her a real chance to be free from it all."
He wants to be selfish, and wants to tell Kuina to fuck off but he can't. "Okay but will you keep my number? Just tell me how she is now and again.""I will. I'll take care of her."
"You were never my worry Kuina. I know you look at me as though I'm some monster but I think you're much smarter than that."
"I am."
"When did you know I cared about her?"
Kuina shrugged, taking a seat closest to the door. "Not right away, I was sure the night you took her to the roof you were going to push her off."
They both laughed, the conversation feeling weird. "So then when?"
Kuina smiles, remembering the memory fondly. "When you stopped her from getting hurt after the hearts game, you didn't need her. You saved her because you wanted to."
He nods. "I was right about you."
"What do you mean?" She raises an unimpressed eyebrow.
"You're too annoying."
She cocks her head to the side. "And your hair is still just as dry."
"I think I'm going to cut it all off." He declares.
Kuina goes to stand. "Let me grab the razor and I'll do it."
The smile drops off of his face. "You must have really gone insane if you think I'm going to let you anywhere near my head with a sharp object."
"There's the Chishiya I know and loathe. I'm going to go before she wakes up, let me know when you're being transferred."
"I will. How's Ann?"
"Surgery went well, she will be okay." Kuina responds before making her exit.
The room falls silent as Kuina leaves, Chishiya finally being left to his own thoughts.
Though this time the idea of being alone wasn't comforting or a chance to relax, it was worrisome, it was dreadful.
It was heartbreak.
