Beep. "Hanni, are you there?" Danielle whispered into her smartwatch as she roamed the parking lot, only to be met with static crackling. Danielle sighs before continuing to creep around in hopes of finding Minji Kim. Thinking she was unsuccessful, Danielle sprinted towards the fire exit as fast as her legs could carry her, desperate to go back and meet the D.E.B.S. But just as she reached the exit, she collided with someone, and they both ended up falling to the ground.
"I'm so sorry!" the two apologized to each other, too busy collecting themselves. By the time they finally looked at each other, their eyes were filled with horror as both of them hurried to grab their guns from the floor. "Oh shit."
The two of them stood up quickly, their movements almost synchronized. Their guns were aimed directly at each other, their fingers on the trigger, ready to fire at a moment's notice.
"You're Minji Kim."
"And you're a D.E.B.," Minji spits back as if she were disgusted.
"You have the right to remain silent," Danielle recites, her voice shaky. Minji laughed at the girl, "You're reading me my rights?" she asked with a raised eyebrow. "Anything you say can and will be used against you."
Time appeared to be frozen as they stood there in a tense standoff. Minji took a good look at Danielle's face, narrowing her eyes, her mouth gently curving upwards when she saw how tense the poor girl was. The latter seemed to notice this as she rolled her eyes, "Okay, here's the thing."
"Yeah?"
"I am really not up for dying today."
"Me neither."
"So I was thinking that, uh–" Danielle compromises, her eyes trailing down to the tip of Minji's gun, "Why don't you put your gun down?"
"Why don't you put your gun down?"
"Err, you're the criminal and I'm the cop, so I think technically I'm more trustworthy."
A small but persistent annoyance started to build up within Minji, wanting nothing more but to go home instead of wasting time with this stupidly pretty D.E.B. who was only there to arrest her. "Bro, I was totally minding my own business on some dumb blind date when you guys started to rain shit all over me," Minji says through gritted teeth, still not putting her gun down. This seemed to ease Danielle's initial tension, replacing it with an unexpected sense of intrigue. Blind date? "O.M.G. you were on a blind date?"
"Whatever."
Danielle pulled her gun away, her free hand now placed on her hip. "With that assassin girl?" Her tone was filled with amusement and curiosity, her eyes gleaming with anticipation as she eagerly awaited the criminal's response. "What?"
"Nothing. I just– I didn't know you were a–"
"A what?"
"A little fruitcake! That really torpedoes my thesis, you know."
Ignoring the fact this cop just called her a little fruitcake, Minji repeated, "Your thesis?" Danielle nods. "I'm writing a term paper on you," she confessed. A soft chuckle escaped Minji's lips as she found the situation amusing. There was just something so endearing about it, but she couldn't put her finger on it. "You're kidding me."
"No, it's for Capes and Capers: Gender Reconstruction and the Criminal Mastermind. It's a very popular class," her words poured out in a flurry of excitement and enthusiasm, her face lighting up in the process. "But it's hard since there's only anecdotal evidence about you. I mean... nobody's actually ever spoken to you."
"Until now," Minji gave her a small smile. "Right. Until now."
As their eyes met, immediate sparks seemed to crackle throughout the air between them. They may not know it yet, but the two of them had chemistry.
"I'm sorry. I didn't get your name."
"Oh," Danielle mutters before fumbling with her gun to hold it in her left armpit. "Marsh. D.E.B.S Sector 1," she introduced herself as she shook hands with Minji. "Minji Kim."
"It's really nice to meet you," the girl spoke softly, her voice coated with sincerity. "But you're still, you know, under arrest," she says with an apologetic smile, taking hold of her gun once more. "Am I?" Minji asked, returning the smile.
"Danielle?" A distant voice called.
Danielle Marsh, huh? Minji heard this and said, "Or you could just let me go."
"I really couldn't," Danielle replied, shaking her head. "Come on. Haven't you ever done anything you're not supposed to?" Minji spoke persuasively, her eyes locked with Danielle's.
"Dani, where are you?"
Danielle took a moment to look over to where Hanni's voice was coming from and shouted, "I'm over here!" When she looked back, there was no trace of Minji anywhere. It was as if the woman had disappeared into thin air. "Son of a bitch!" she groaned with a light stomp on her foot.
The rest of the girls finally made it to the scene, putting their guns down when they saw that Danielle was alone. "Oh my gosh, are you okay? We couldn't reach you, dude!" Hanni checks up, to which Dani just mouthed, "I'm fine."
"Well, what happened?" Haerin asked, feeling a lingering sense of disbelief and bewilderment from the blonde. "She was here. Minji Kim was here."
The girls stared at Danielle, their eyes widening in shock and disbelief. They couldn't quite believe what they had just heard. "Shut up, that's impossible!" Hyein exclaimed, running over to hug Dani to which the latter happily returned. "If she was here, you'd be dead by now," Haerin spoke. That's when Hanni crouched down, seemingly noticing something on the floor. "You guys..."
There were numerous fragments of diamonds, each one sparkling in the parking lot's dim light. The sight of one in Hanni's hand sent a shiver down their spines, as they knew exactly what this meant - Danielle did in fact come face to face with Minji Kim. It was the villain's signature touch, her bold way of marking her presence that she knows is sought out by thousands if not millions of cops in the world.
"Holy moly," Haerin mutters in pure disbelief. "Do you know what this even means?" Danielle shook her head. "You are the only one ever to fight Minji Kim and live to tell about it."
Danielle's jaw dropped, which was soon replaced with a toothy smile as she and Hyein ran to pull Hanni and Haerin into a tight group hug. Danielle, Hanni, and Hyein huddled together in a tight embrace, their arms wrapped around each other as they jumped up and down, laughter and cheers echoing all throughout the parking lot. Meanwhile, it was getting too congested for Haerin's liking as she tried her best to wriggle out of the hug. At some point, she even found her face awkwardly smooshed to one of the girl's bosom. But her friends held on tightly, refusing to let her go, their cheerfulness too contagious to resist.
