There was a tense silence in Professor Sharp's office.
The sound of bubbling potions filled the air. In the distance, miscellaneous sounds of Hogwarts rang out, marking the busy start of the year ahead.
Sebastian looked down at the shiny Prefect badge sitting on Professor Sharp's desk.
He looked up at the head of Slytherin, who was giving him a look that was halfway regretful and withering.
"That's a horrible idea, sir," Sebastian said flatly.
"Believe me, Mister Sallow," Professor Sharp sighed, "I'm aware."
"Is there really nobody else?"
"Miss Reyes believes she has far too much responsibility on her hands," his Professor went on, reaching for a piece of official-looking parchment. "And Mister Gaunt already has his Healer training duties to attend to. So my option falls to you, Mister Sallow, otherwise Slytherin will be short one Prefect. Am I going to regret this?"
He held out the parchment. It was a Prefect form, neatly blocking out his duties and responsibilities.
Sebastian grinned and took it from him. "Of course not, Professor Sharp," he said quickly.
By the time he was finished with the form, the morning sun had risen high over the Hogwarts castle. Sebastian strode into the halls of the school, feeling both proud and foolish of the shiny new Prefect badge that had replaced his Slytherin sigil. He passed familiar stretches of sandstone halls, walked past bickering suits of armor, and strode out into the sunlit Transfiguration Courtyard. It was going to be his last year here. The thought was achingly bittersweet.
He found Allegra sitting under a familiar tree. Ominis' house robes were draped over her lap as she thumbed through their new textbooks. She looked up and gave him a smile.
Sebastian's eyes rested on the shiny red Prefect badge sitting on her chest. A red badge, a golden P.
Allegra's gaze flickered to the matching green shield and silver P on his uniform.
He cleared his throat and folded his hands together, giving Allegra his best haughty look. "Good day, fellow Prefect," Sebastian drawled.
Allegra straightened and sat in a prim and proper pose. "A lovely morning indeed, Mister Prefect."
They exchanged wicked grins.
And then they both burst out laughing, spurred by the ridiculous idea that Sebastian Sallow and Allegra Chant would ever make good Prefects for their respective houses. When Ominis found them, dressed in his new green-and-white Apprentice robes, Sebastian and Allegra laughed harder.
"What?" Ominis asked, confused. "What's so funny?"
"Look, Ominis!" Allegra said breathlessly. She unpinned her badge and pressed it into his hands. "They made us Prefects!"
Sebastian handed his over. Ominis scowled as he ran his hands over each badge.
"Why in Merlin's name would they do that?" he drawled.
Sebastian and Allegra erupted into another fit of laughter, earning a confused, withering look from Ominis.
It was a new term. Ominis' last term, the final year he would spend wandering the halls of Hogwarts and its many nooks and crannies. He secretly shared Allegra's birthday sentiments: Merlin, please let this be a nice, normal year.
