Sophie and Ealdred continue their stroll through the garden. The conversation flows more freely now, as if Ealdred's mention of his twin sister has opened a more personal chapter between them. Sophie is touched by his candor and feels a connection that goes beyond their initial interactions; it's as if they are peeling back layers, revealing more of themselves than they anticipated.
As Ealdred walked beside Sophie through the lush garden, he found himself sharing more than he usually would. Each topic they touched upon seemed to naturally unfold into deeper, more personal territory. It was a rare thing for him to feel so at ease with someone, especially someone from a different realm. Observing Sophie's genuine interest and her thoughtful responses, Ealdred couldn't help but feel a connection that surprised him in its intensity. His initial reserve was slipping, replaced by a growing trust and curiosity about the woman who had so unexpectedly become a part of his world.
As they continued their walk, Sophie opened up about her life back on Earth, sharing stories of her grandparents and the dreams they had for her. Ealdred listened intently, finding himself drawn into her world through her vivid descriptions and heartfelt emotions. Her resilience and determination, clearly influenced by her love for her grandparents, resonated with him, deepening his admiration for her spirit.
As they strolled back toward the dormitories, their conversation meandered through various subjects. Sophie shared anecdotes from her life on Earth, her experiences, and her aspirations. Ealdred, in turn, talked about his responsibilities and dreams as the future Lord of Gardwyn, and how his upbringing had been shaped by both privilege and duty. They discussed their favorite books and hobbies, discovering mutual interests in history and music, which sparked a lively debate over the merits of classical versus modern musical styles. This easy exchange not only deepened their understanding of each other but also strengthened the bond that was gradually forming between them.
As Sophie and Ealdred approached the dormitory, Georgina quickly intercepted them, her expression strained and her voice carrying an undertone of urgency. "Ealdred, there you are! I've been searching for you," she said, her gaze shifting sharply between him and Sophie.
Ealdred's response was polite but measured. "Georgina, we were just returning from the garden. What's the matter?"
"There's an important matter regarding the upcoming transaction between our hourses her eyes darting back to Sophie with a hint of irritation. "It seems you've been quite... preoccupied recently."
Sophie picked up on the tension and decided to excuse herself to ease the situation. "I'll leave you two to discuss your business," she said, giving Ealdred a supportive nod before heading towards her quarters, leaving Ealdred to address the concerns with Georgina.
Ealdred watched Sophie walk away, a hint of frustration crossing his features as he turned back to Georgina. "Was it necessary to interrupt us so abruptly, Georgina? Sophie might misunderstand our intentions here," he said, his tone slightly sharper than usual.
Georgina, sensing his irritation, tried to smooth things over. "I didn't mean to cause any trouble, Ealdred. It's just that this transaction is critical, and I needed to catch you before you were too far. We have a lot to prepare, and I thought you should be in the loop as soon as possible."
Ealdred sighed, his demeanor softening slightly. "I understand the importance, but let's try to handle these matters with a bit more tact next time. Sophie is new here, and I don't want her to feel isolated or caught up in politics she doesn't understand yet."
Georgina caught up to Ealdred, her tone laced with a mix of curiosity and challenge. "So, are you trying to impress that earthling, Ealdred? Perhaps you've forgotten, but you're meant to be a future lord, not a common charmer."
Ealdred paused, turning to face her with a steady gaze. "Impressing Sophie isn't my goal, Georgina. I'm simply doing what I believe is right. And remember, I am fully aware of my responsibilities, both to our traditions and to the principles of fairness and respect."
Georgina's expression tightened, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper. "You might do well to remember that our houses have plans for us, Ealdred. Plans that don't include dalliances with realm crossers, no matter how noble they might seem to you."
Ealdred's eyes narrowed slightly, but he maintained his composure. "Let's keep our focus on the project, Georgina. Our personal views on this matter should not cloud our professional judgment or the interests of our houses."
