On May 22, 2008, an EF3 tornado struck the town of Windsor right before noon with very little warning. It swept northeastward across Weld County. It initially touched down northeast of Platteville and lifted northwest of Wellington. There were pockets of damage near the Missile Silo Park Campground. One man was killed trying to escape the trailer park in his motor home. Tractor trailers also flipped over on I-85. It also overturned train cars and flattened Windsor's main feedlot and destroyed a dairy barn where most of the 400 cows were killed in the tornado. The tornado also hit a childcare center but no fatalities occurred there.
